Topics in today’s issue of Extension Update:

WSU LAUNCHES “SKILLSOFT” E-TRAINING FOR MS OUTLOOK
Professional training opportunities for Washington State University faculty, staff and students statewide multiplied exponentially on Monday, June 27, and became available online at the touch of a computer mouse. This new instructional venue called e-training is a partnership among Human Resource Service (HRS), Business Affairs and Information Technology Services (ITS), and a service contract with a company named SkillSoft. For the full story see WSU Today.

Given the timing of this launch, the first major training program that WSU is promoting via SkillSoft is for Microsoft Outlook. About 20 different Outlook courses are being offered based upon a person’s level of experience with the software and their needs. To explore the training available to WSU faculty, staff and students for Outlook and many other topics, go to https://www.hrs.wsu.edu/skillsoft and sign in with your university network ID and password.

RURAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP ACROSS INDIAN COUNTRY
“Rural Entrepreneurship Across Indian Country: A Listening Session on Programs, Strategies, and Possibilities” is scheduled for July 12, 2005, at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, ND. The meeting is co-sponsored by the North Central Regional Rural Development Center, the Western Rural Development Center, and North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND, with funding from the Northwest Area Foundation. It is part of a National Rural Entrepreneurship Initiative underway with leadership from the four USDA-CSREES Regional Rural Development Centers and Washington State University Professor and Extension Specialist James Zuiches.

Listening sessions are scheduled across the country, through summer 2005, bringing together researchers, rural development practitioners, community organizations, local development agencies, and private sector peers. Over 142 organizations in 44 states will participate. In addition to CSREES base program funding to the Regional Centers, the Initiative has received $150,000 from W.K. Kellogg Foundation, $25,000 from Northwest Area Foundation, and $20,000 from Farm Foundation.

Sally Maggard, CSREES National Program Leader for Rural Sociology, and Jill Auburn, CSREES National Program Leader for Sustainable Agriculture, are working with Dr. Zuiches. For additional information contact James Zuiches, WSU Department of Community and Rural Sociology at 509-335-8540 or zuiches@wsu.edu; Sally Maggard at 202-720-0741 or smaggard@csrees.usda.gov; or Jill Auburn at 202-720-5384 or jauburn@csrees.usda.gov.

For additional information on the July 12, 2005, session contact Mary Emery, Associate Director, North Central Regional Rural Development Center at 515-294-298321 or memery@iastate.edu, or John Allen, Director, Western Rural Development Center at 435-797-9732 or johna@ext.usu.edu.

NEW ONLINE MASTER’S DEGREE IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD) announced the new Community Development On-line Master’s Degree Program. Two three-credit courses will be offered in the fall 2005:

  • Community and Natural Resource Management, and
  • Introduction to Native Communities.

Three of the six participating universities are approved to offer these courses: Iowa State University, Ames, IA; South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD; and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE. Students should contact the graduate college at the institution of their choice. Other participating universities to offer courses in later semesters include Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS; North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND; and the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO.

John Phillips, USDA liaison to the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, will teach as an adjunct professor for the University of Missouri. According to Phillips, the program “brings a respectful, participatory and holistic approach to community development in Indian Country. It starts by acknowledging Native American strengths such as sovereignty, culture and history, and then provides the appropriate tools to develop stronger and healthier communities.” For more information about the degree program and an informational brochure go to the NCRCRD or contact SUSAN FEY, Program Coordinator, NCRCRD, at 515-294-6250 or susanfey@iastate.edu , or SALLY MAGGARD, CSREES National Program Leader, Economic and Community Systems at 202-720-0741 or smaggard@csrees.usda.gov.

WSU COURIER SERVICE
Just a reminder that the purpose of the courier service between specified WSU urban campuses and research stations is to move official, time-sensitive WSU materials. Courier materials should fit into an interdepartmental mail envelope. All courier material is shipped over-night with Federal Express or TCM Courier. The receiving location is responsible for paying the freight charges, which can be very costly. Therefore the shipping of boxes or heavy items is discouraged. If you have any questions, please call Kathy at 509-335-4153 or refer to Business Policies and Procedures 80.18.
