Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:
EXTENSION ENGAGED APRIL 8th: WEEKLY
WASHINGTON AGRICULTURAL STATISTICSSERVICE
The Friday, April 8 "Extension Engaged" will feature
a look at the weekly Washington Agricultural Statistics Service
(WASS) reports. These reports provide acreage, yield and production
estimate and livestock inventories for the state of Washington.
During the growing season there is also a component covering the
current weather conditions and effects on crops; planting and harvesting
progress; crop development progress and weather data for selected
points throughout the state. This is the most widely read report
issued by WASS. The WASS report is based on input from County Extension
Educators as well as FSA county directors.
Considering the current drought conditions being experienced in
Washington, this report will be a valuable tool for producers throughout
the state and this month's broadcast will provide details about
the reports and how they are used.
The program will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 am and will feature
Joe Parson, Deputy Director of the Washington Statistical Office
of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service and Jennifer
Brown, an Agricultural Statistician with the office." This
is a video stream event only.
EXTENSION ENGAGED APRIL 21st: RESOURCES
FOR RETIREMENTPLANNING
Please plan to join us on Thursday, April 21, from 10:00 to
11:00 am for a special videostreamed broadcast on "Resources
for Retirement Planning." The broadcast will feature Becky
Priebe from the CAHNRS Business and Finance office, Jan Rauk, Associate
Director of WSU Benefit Services and Marie Weiss from Human Resource
Services. More details will follow closer to the broadcast but we
wanted to let you know now so you could reserve the time on your
calendar.
For those of you in Pullman, please plan to join us as part of
our studio audience in room T-101 of the Food Science and Human
Nutrition Building. And for those of you off campus, remember that
this is a videostream only event and the stream we will be available

COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELING (COOL)
As you know Congress mandated Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL)
for beef, lamb, pork, poultry, and fish in 2002. The mandate continues
to be the subject of debate. A series of short papers on COOL is
featured in Choices
magazine. The series of papers on agricultural policy may help
to frame some of these important issues.
