WSU Extension Core Competencies Story

WSU Extension’s Core Competency initiative began November 2006. A group of campus and off-campus Extension employees identified a set of skills and attributes essential to success as an educator with WSU Extension. This set of attributes was used to develop a defined set of Core Competencies for WSU Extension educators.

WSU Extension is taking a comprehensive look at its professional development efforts with the goal of creating a dynamic, integrated, organization-wide system that serves the needs of all employees at all stages of employment.

The Competencies represent a body of thoughtful work, encompassing the skill sets necessary for becoming a truly effective WSU Extension educator. To fully recognize and implement the Core Competency system, there is a need for integration, communication, and administrative alignment. The Core Competencies need to be 1) closely integrated with Extension’s employment, evaluation and professional development systems; 2) promoted at all levels of the organization; and 3) developed through a variety of educational opportunities.
