Increase visibility and viability of WSU Extension Professional Development.
Adaption of WSU Extension Core Competencies. Implement strategies for success of WSU Extension Core competencies.
Facilitate development/adoption of web modules that include: Screening Volunteers, Pesticide Regulations, Animal Research Regulations, Human Subjects, WSU Ethics, and Sexual Harassment.
Initiate PD Notes, a regular e-newsletter that targets professional development opportunities as well as shares information regarding professional development strategies.
Explain vision and methodologies of the PD program to internal groups such as WSU Extension, Affiliation of the Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC), Professional Development Associations (WS4-HA, WEAFCS, WEASA), and the WSU Extension Administrative Team.
Build and strengthen relationships to support professional development for WSU Extension.
Continue discussions and build relationships with WSU Human Resource Services, WSU Center for Distance and Professional Education, the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, the Office of the Vice President for Equity and Diversity, the WSU Center for Human Rights, and academic departments.
Our Skill Development Goals within WSU Extension
Support WSU Extension Strategic program goals and initiatives through mechanisms targeting Professional Development for WSU Extension educators.
Support avenues of increasing subject matter skills in WSU Extension faculty and program staff. Coordinate with program directors, district directors, and academic department chairs to offer subject matter updates and process skill development for field based faculty and program staff. Cross sell programs. For example coordinate with 4-H Professional Development Action Team (4-H PDAT) to co-offer trainings that are relevant to other volunteer based programs (i.e. youth protection training for volunteer managers targeting Master Gardeners, etc.) Advertise Department based subject matter training opportunities through e-newsletter and encourage use of the WSU Extension web based calendar as central point for information sharing regarding subject matter training. Actively promote Professional Development as a major element in interdisciplinary programmatic teams.
Collaborate with Diversity Director and Catalyst Team.
Integrate building cultural competency concepts into other professional development training. Explore professional development offerings regarding Internationalizing Extension to build both programmatic and cultural competencies. Promote international opportunities for faculty professional development. Utilize e-newsletter and PD web site to assist faculty to make connections with international opportunities as a professional development opportunity.
Communicate with organizations such as ACDI/VOCA to seek out appropriate international activities and communicate them to the faculty and staff. Introduce concept of “international study tour” to build programmatic and cultural competencies.
Increase capacity within WSU Extension to effectively plan, evaluate and share programmatic impacts.
Offer training opportunities that target program planning, evaluation and development/sharing of programmatic impacts.
Implement AREI proposal for developing organizational mentors that will assist peers in LOGIC models, applied research/evaluation and development of impact statements.
Increase skills of training core in utilizing advanced LOGIC models to plan and evaluate program, development of impact statements and sharing of Extension scholarship through in-service training. The training core will include faculty, Program Directors, District Directors and Department heads.
Build knowledge base of scholarship of Extension through AREI cohort training process. Promote Extension faculty delivery of peer reviewed papers, posters and presentations of their work on program development, evaluation and impact discovery.
Incorporate basic training components of program planning, evaluation and impact reporting through subject matter training.
Increase communication skills in WSU Extension Educators.
Offer track through various training venues to increase communication skills.
Complete and implement web based communication modules that support communication skill development.
Work with District Directors, County Directors and faculty to implement a variety of PD opportunities to assist faculty in building skills in communication. Examples include basic communication (verbal and written) development, conflict management, meeting management, group facilitation, public presentations, written communication.
Increase skills of faculty and staff in working with the media.
Coordinate with Marketing and News Services to complete web modules for implementation of training on the integrated marketing tool kits. Market use of modules through PD website and e-newsletter.
Implement a variety of PD opportunities to assist faculty in media skills, i.e., writing for the media, developing a marketing plan, building relationships to enhance media coverage of WSU Extension. Coordinate with District Directors and Directors of Marketing and News Services and Extension Communications and Educational Support.
Leverage web/technology by providing training to WSUE educators. Potential training topics include using pod casts to reach audiences, blogs and list serves as educational methods.Coordinate with District Directors and Directors of Marketing and News Services and Extension Communications and Educational Support.
