Professional Development

Training Opportunities
for Extension County Directors

A number of approaches have been adopted to strengthen the role and responsibilities of the county director. As a result, each director is encouraged to improve skills by participating in professional development experiences focused on management and leadership.

Each District Director has a limited amount of money available to support director participation in professional development experiences. Directors should submit their requests, based on their professional development plans, for approval and reimbursement to the District Director. The professional development plan and results will be reviewed by the County and Regional Directors during the annual performance appraisal.

Management and leadership development experiences can be obtained from many educational sources. Many opportunities are available through electronic delivery methods. Please take a minute and explore the opportunities for leadership development listed below.

The WSU Extension Affiliate of the Washington State Association of Counties collaborates with WSAC to host a conference each fall. County Directors are members of this affiliate organization and are encouraged to attend the conference and participate in the track that is specifically designed for WSU Extension County Directors.

Extension Middle Managers from throughout the Western United States meet each summer for a week of professional development. Participants are usually County Directors, District Directors and Department heads. The Western Mid-Managers Conference often corresponds with the Western Extension Directors summer meetings. Ask your District Director about attending the conference.

The Western Extension Leadership Development (WELD) program that is offered every two-year is designed for Cooperative Extension faculty, agents, advisors, educators, and specialists in the Western United States and territories. This leadership development program opens to all WSU Extension faculty. However, as a new County Director it may be very valuable as a leadership skill building program.

The primary purpose of LEAD21 is to develop leaders in land grant institutions and their strategic partners who link research, academics, and extension in order to lead more effectively in an increasingly complex environment, either in their current position or as they aspire to other positions. The intense two year program is offered each year. A limited number of participants are selected through WSU Extension and CAHNRS.
