Purpose of information/data collection is...   

 

A. Research

The collection of information/data that are intended to prove or disprove a stated hypothesis that will in turn contribute to a theoretical framework or established body of knowledge. Research design is intended to be replicated in other settings and results are expected to be generalized to a larger population beyond site of data collection. Primary beneficiaries of research are other researchers, scholars, and practitioners in the field of study. Publication of results of research is intended to inform the field of study. Some research may be considered exempt research.

If YES, then...

IRB review required.

  1. Complete the REQUIRED Human Subjects Training.
  2. Submit Non-Exempt Application to IRB.
  3. Develop a Consent Form (Step #5).

If NO, then...

Go to Step #2-B.

B. Non-Research Assessment

Collection of information/data that are intended to inform participants in the study, to improve the quality of a program, to assess value of programs or services received by participants, or to inform design and development of an educational program. 

Design of such studies is not intended to be replicated in other settings and results are not expected to be generalized to a population beyond the site of data collection.  Primary beneficiaries are program participants. They benefit from broader knowledge of public/community opinions, greater program accountability, and improved program quality.
