Essential Skills Training
In March of 2008, the Northeast and Southeast districts of WSU Extension hosted a three-day training workshop offering in-service training in four core areas: communication, cultural competency, facilitation, and program planning and evaluation. The participant post-evaluations identified an overarching need for this training as it is essential to building upon the Core Competency skills necessary for WSU Extension Educators to be successful in their careers, in delivery of extension programs.
The WSU Extension Essential Skills Training is, in effect, a continuum of the orientation process and an integral part in building the next generation of skilled WSU Extension educators. Newly hired Extension educators will attend training in each of these areas within their first 24 months of employment with WSU Extension. To ensure opportunities for all WSU Extension educators to attend the Essential Skills Training, additional tracks will be offered through the year 2010. After which, the training schedule for each skill area will consist of one annual workshop. The trainings will be advertised through the Professional Development website, the weekly Extension Update and the WSU Extension calendar of events. Direct supervisors are encouraged to insure that new educators attend the trainings.
Resources required to implement this training series may include travel and related expenses for participants and trainers. Registration fees will cover basic costs. Currently the system has an assembly of trainers and developed curriculum for each of the four skill areas.
