Tools and Resources

Below are links to several computer tools that are available for doing forest finance calculations. These tools all have similar functions but they each have different features and characteristics, so it is worthwhile to try several and select the tool(s) that works the best for you. Most of these tools are distributed freely or are otherwise available for purchase for a nominal charge.

Economagic Calculator

The Economagic Calculator is the companion tool for this learning module. With the Economagic Calculator there is no need to remember any financial formulas. You can select the type of calculation you want to do (a built-in guide is available for help with this), enter your information in the appropriate blanks, and the calculator will do the rest. Use this calculator to follow along with the examples in the lessons and when working on the lesson exercises and activities. Economagic Calculator is a freely available online tool that works in your web browser with no need to install any special software.

The Economagic Calculator can perform the following calculations:

  • Future values of single sums and payment series
  • Present values of single sums and payment series
  • Annual payments
  • Net present value (NPV)
  • Soil Expectation Value (SEV)
  • Forest Value
  • Nominal/Real interest rate conversions

Landscape Management System (LMS) with Economatic

The Landscape Management System is a powerful forest projection and simulation program that integrates growth, treatment, and visualization models under a single, user-friendly interface. With LMS you can generate realistic computer images of what your forest looks like and project how the forest will grow and change over time. LMS tracks the growth of your forest for the management options you choose, and it tracks a variety of outputs including standing and harvested volume, stand structure characteristics, habitat quality, carbon sequestration, economics, and many others. With LMS you can ask “what if…” and explore the outcomes of endless management options for your forest.

LMS includes a companion program called the Inventory Wizard that will help you gather the basic data from your forest that you will need to get started. LMS also includes a companion program called Economatic, which is a unique economic/financial analysis tool that integrates directly with the growth and treatment models in LMS. Economatic will automatically import harvest information from your LMS simulations and compute a variety of economic outputs including cash flow, net present value (NPV), soil expectation value (SEV), and forest value. Economatic is easy to use and it allows you to completely customize your costs and log values.

LMS was developed at the University of Washington College of Forest Resources where it continues to be developed in partnership with the Rural Technology Initiative and the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. LMS and all of its companion programs are available for free download from http://lms.cfr.washington.edu/download/.

Financial Analysis for Forest Landowners

Financial Analysis for Forest Landowners is a forestry financial analysis spreadsheet developed by Larry Mason at the University of Washington College of Forest Resources. This spreadsheet takes user-entered cost and revenue information for a forest rotation and generates several economic and financial outputs, including net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). A sophisticated forest tax burden analysis is also available. A copy of this spreadsheet is available for free download.

FORVAL

FORVAL is forestry investment analysis program provided by the Mississippi State University Forest and Wildlife Research Center. FORVAL is a flexible, easy to use program in which users can enter cost and revenue information and generate a variety of forest finance outputs, including net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), soil expectation value (SEV), and others. FORVAL can also do more generic financial calculations such as computing annual payments.

FORVAL is available for free download as a stand-alone program. An online version is also available that will work in your web browser.

TDSS

The Timberland Decision Support System is an online financial calculator provided by the Texas Forest Service. The TDSS offers basic compound interest calculations (present values, future values, etc.) as well as important forest finance outputs such as soil expectation value (SEV). The TDSS is freely available and works in your web browser similar to the Economagic Calculator and FORVAL online.

Tree Cents

TreeCents is a robust and highly customizable forestry financial analysis program available for purchase from Forest Econ, Inc. With TreeCents users can input a variety of management costs and revenues and generate a number of outputs, including net present value, soil expectation value, and others. TreeCents offers comparisons of alternative land uses and also helps users interpret results.
