Improving Access to Higher Education
Washington State University Extension Learning Centers
Washington State University Extension operates Learning Centers that are strategically located throughout the state. These centers actively collaborate with the WSU Distance Degree Program, community colleges, and the local communities to improve access to higher education.
- In 2006, 821 students were enrolled at the Learning Centers representing 471 full-time student equivalents. Many, if not most, are place-bound students that would not have access to a bachelor’s degree or graduate education.
- Since 2000, 552 students received BS or BA degrees through the Learning Centers. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that acquisition of each four-year degree will enhance individual lifetime earnings by $900,000. Therefore, the cumulative economic value of the education received by these 552 individuals is almost $500 million.
