Scott VanderWey
Scott VanderWey’s acceptance of the 4-H State Challenge Manager position made front page WSU Extension news more than two and half months before his appointment began on May 1, 2007. Working out of Puyallup, Scott oversees adventure-based 4-H programs throughout the state. His 17 years of experience with Washington’s 4-H Challenge program has developed into expertise with teaching ropes courses, guiding mountain and rock climbing trips, expeditionary learning, outdoor education programming, and community building. For the past seven years he has worked for the Seattle public school district, including as a consultant in the past two years. Scott earned an MS in special education from the University of Oregon in 2000, and a BA in environmental and experiential education from Western Washington University in 1996. In addition, he has a multitude of certifications, including those for wilderness rescue, life guarding, and teaching severely handicapped learners.
Scott’s hobbies are woodworking, building furniture, house remodeling, raising a family, hiking, climbing, backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, swimming, world traveling, teaching, and getting as many people as he can outdoors.
