Paul Roberts, author, “The End of Food”

Paul Roberts will speak on March 11, at 1:30 at the All Extension Symposium. He will present a workshop on March 12 at 9:00 am at T101 and broadcast throughout the state.
                A journalist since 1983, Paul Roberts writes and lectures frequently on the complex interplay of economics, technology, and the natural world. Roberts has also written for The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and The (UK) Guardian and has appeared in Slate, USA Today, The New Republic, Newsweek, The Christian Science Monitor, Rolling Stone, and Outside magazine.  "The End of Food" follows the successful publication of Roberts's first book, "The End of Oil", published in 2004.
                Roberts was a finalist for the National Magazine Award (1999) and for the New York Public Library Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2005.

                A long-time observer of energy issues and politics, Roberts appears regularly on national and international television and radio news shows, including CNN's Lou Dobbs, the BBC, PBS NewsHour, MSNBC, CBS Evening News, and on NPR's Morning Edition, On Point, Weekend Edition, and Fresh Air. He lives in Washington State.

 

Cheryl Scott, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, “Acting Locally and Globally –
Pursuing Equity in Health.”

Cheryl Scott helps build capacity and expertise across Global Health teams to ensure that vaccines and other health solutions reach the people who need them most.  Scott will speak at the All Extension Symposium at 9:30 am.
                A Seattle native Scott is the Senior Advisor to the President of Global Health, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and former CEO of Seattle Group Health. Scott joined the foundation in 2006 as chief operating officer. She oversaw all major operational functions and, following Warren Buffett’s historic gift, led foundation-wide change initiatives to achieve large and rapid increases in organizational and grantmaking capacity and impact some of the world’s biggest challenges.

                Before joining the foundation, Scott served for eight years as president and CEO of Seattle-based Group Health Cooperative, one of the oldest and most respected integrated health care systems in the U.S. She also served as Group Health’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. Scott is a clinical professor in the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington, where she teaches a graduate seminar on leading complex adaptive systems.

  

David Brewster, Publisher of Crosscut.com, “The Brave New World of Online Media. Where it came from and why there’s no going back, and how to make it work for you and WSU?”

David Brewster, Publisher of Crosscut.com (an online daily newspaper for the Pacific Northwest) and founder of Seattle Weekly will speak at the March 11th All Extension Symposium at 10:45.  Mr. Brewster will address strategic thinking related to media, learning and communication - how people choose information and make decisions from that information, now and in the future. Brewster is the publisher of Crosscut.com. Crosscut is an online venture seeking to “reinvigorate local journalism in the Pacific Northwest.   He also founded the Seattle Weekly in 1976 and ran it for 21 years. After selling the Seattle Weekly in 2005, he engaged in creating a civic and cultural center in a restored old building on Seattle's First Hill. Brewster was also responsible for creating the Northwest Best Places, a guidebook series, and was a columnist for the Seattle Times.
