MAYES RETIRES, BARALE NAMED EFNEP PROGRAM LEADER
Elaine Mayes, a coordinator of the statewide Food $ense Program, is retiring effective February 29, 2008 after over thirty years of service to WSU Extension. Elaine first worked as a faculty member in Walla Walla County, then in Spokane County providing leadership for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and food safety programs.
For the last seven years, Elaine has been the statewide coordinator of EFNEP. She introduced an innovative teaching by dialogue curriculum and updated many of the publications. Elaine has also provided leadership for the Food Stamp Nutrition Education contract, a challenging effort as
it grew in numbers and complexity. She increased the consistency of
the contract process and assured that the record management process
would pass audit scrutiny. We are grateful for her patient and careful
stewardship of the largest Extension program in the state, and wish her the best as she makes the transition to retirement.
Karen Barale, Extension faculty in Pierce County, will move into the state leadership role for EFNEP effective March 3, 2008. Karen was instrumental in designing the new EFNEP curriculum and will supporting implementation of it in her new role. Karen will maintain a portion of her county responsibilities and her office will remain with Pierce County Extension. Congratulations and many thanks to Karen for her willingness to step into a state leadership role.
A Notice of Vacancy for a Food Stamp Nutrition Education Coordinator to join the existing leadership team has already been released. Screening will begin after March 3rd.
