MASTER GARDENER FOUNDATION OF WASHINGTON STATE Legislative Day, February 5, 2008
On Tuesday, February 5, 2008, Master Gardener volunteers representing MG Foundation will have the opportunity to inform Washington State legislators about all the good work Master Gardeners do in partnership with WSU Extension. Master Gardeners are being asked to schedule a trip to Olympia to visit with representatives and senators from their district. This year we are celebrating the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Master Gardener program by WSU in King and Pierce Counties. It will be a time to come together as volunteers to show support for our great program.
Prior to your visit, MG are encouraged to prepare a one-page letter listing activities in your county. The letter should include the number of Master Gardeners and the number of hours they donate to the program. The letter should also describe impressive program impacts in your county and your clinic locations and/or classes. You should limit the letter to one page. We don't want to bury them in paper. MG are asked to call representatives and senators to make an appointment. If you need contact phone numbers, e-mail Bill Havens, MGFWS at behavens@earthlink.net. Give me your legislative district number and Bill will provide you with the phone numbers.
Master Gardeners will meet together in the Capital Rotunda at 10 a.m. on February 5th. Not all of your senators or representatives will be available on that day; however, your literature can be delivered to their office in Olympia or you can visit them when they are in your home district.
Let's use this opportunity to remind our legislators about the importance of the Master Gardener program in communities all over the state. Together we can demonstrate to our legislators that the citizens of Washington State are receiving a worthy return on their investment in our program.

FY 2008 NATIONAL INTEGRATED WATER QUALITY PROGRAM (NIWQP) REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
The release of the FY 2008 National Integrated Water Quality Program (NIWQP) Request for Applications (RFA) has been announced. The link http://www.csrees.usda.gov/fo/waterqualityicgp.cfm will take you to the CSREES funding opportunity page. From that site, you can download the RFA and access the Grants.gov application site.
For the FY 2008 RFA, we have combined priorities for the Extension/Education and Integrated Research, Education, and Extension projects (pp. 10-12 of the RFA). We believe that combining these priority areas is consistent with all efforts aimed at solving problems at a watershed (or similar) scale. We also have created an opportunity for Education (only) focused projects on these same priority areas (pp. 10-12). We anticipate that these education projects will foster new multi-disciplinary educational opportunities to prepare the next generation of water professionals.
CSREES will release a future RFA for the Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP). This RFA will focus on effects of grazing land conservation practices on watershed health. Our anticipated release date is late February or early March 2008. If you have questions regarding the NIWQP RFA, please feel free to contact Mike O’Neill (moneill@csrees.usda.gov) or Bruce Mertz (bmertz@csrees.usda.gov).
