Mary Katherine Deen – CAHNRS FACULTY EXCELLENCE IN EXTENSION
Washington State University College of Agricultural, Human, and natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) selected Dr. Mary Katherine Deen as the Extension Faculty Excellence Award winner on Saturday April 14, 2007. The Faculty Excellence Awards were established to recognize faculty for program innovation, scope, impact and professional leadership.  Dr. Deen's eighteen year career as a member of the Human Development Department exemplifies all of these essential attributes.  Her work in program impact evaluation, professional development leadership, and children, youth and families at risk has been recognized at the state, regional and national levels.  The youth and family program impact evaluation of Dr. Deen has led to the development of the 4-H Life Skills Assessment Tool, which is a web-based data collection instrument. Not only is it the preferred standard for evaluating Washington's 4-H and family programs, but it has been purchased by eight additional states.  Dr. Deen is the creator and immediate past director of the national 4-H Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship Certificate Program funded by the U.S.Dept of Labor. Her stellar career of innovative programming has been supported by over $1.5 million in federal funding to build organizational capacity in delivering educational programs to low-income and culturally diverse residents. Dr. Deen's recognition as the 2007 Extension Faculty Excellence Award winner is the obviously result of her career of outstanding Extension educational leadership. Congratulations to Mary Katherine!

DOUGLAS B. WALSH – FACULTY EXCELLENCE FOR RESEARCH/EXTENSION INTEGRATION
Dr. Doug Walsh, Entomology located at WSU Prosser (75% Extension, 25% Research), was awarded the CAHNRS Faculty Excellence in Extension Award.  This award was established to recognize extension faculty for program innovation, scope, impact of their programs, and leadership. These areas could include development of new or innovative programs, expanded linkages with non-college organizations, or innovative program delivery. Dr. Walsh is an outstanding example of an individual that integrates research and outreach.  Dr. Walsh’s research encompasses aspects of crop protection technologies while his extension efforts provide guidance to commodity as well as environmental groups, state and federal agencies, and university faculty and staff. He has received substantial support for his research, totaling just over $2.5 million during the last eight years alone. The results of his efforts are published in refereed scientific journals as well as trade publications and the popular press.  He is highly prized on the speaking circuit and during 2006 alone he delivered over fifty presentations. Many of these presentations are in-depth and involve day long events as well as “tours.”  Excellent job Doug!

DONG-HYUN KANG – CAHNRS FACULTY EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH
CAHNRS awarded Dr. Dong-Hyun Kang of the WSU Food Science and Human Nutrition (60% Research, 40% Extension) the Faculty Excellence in Research Award. This award is presented for major research or creative contributions completed.  It must be widely recognized as highly meritorious and must have significant impact. Dr. Kang received his Ph.D. from Kansas State University in 1997 and served as a research associate for USDA until his hire by WSU in 2000.  As a young scientist, Dr. Kang has gained a national and international reputation for his innovative research in food microbiology and the detection and prevention of foodborne pathogens. Dr. Kang has published over forty refereed journal articles in national y recognized journals in his field.  Fifty-five research proposals have been written with funding for twenty-two of these totaling over $2.5 million. He has made over thirty invited presentations and sixty international presentations. Dr. Kang is serving as editor for three nationally recognized journals and on the editorial board of three more. Well done Dong-Hyun!
