Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

EXTENSION AG ISSUES-FOCUSED TEAMS PROPOSALS ANNOUNCED
Seventeen excellent proposals were submitted for funding consideration under the Extension Issue-focused Teams initiative within the WSU Extension Agriculture Program and the following six proposals have been chosen to receive funding:

1) Development of a WA State Cattle Health Assurance Program: BVDV Voluntary Control and Eradication Pilot Project - J.R. Wenz - FDIU, Holly Neibergs - AnSci, Shannon Neibergs - SES, and Dale Moore - Vet Ext - CVM

Team also includes: Norm Suverly, Mark Heitstuman, and Susan Kerr

This project is in line with Pres. Floyd's commitment and vision to advance global animal health as a premier WSU area of excellence.  It also involves and engages a number of recent hires and it carries strong endorsement from the livestock industry and state government.  Over 1000 producers and 50 veterinarians could potentials be impacted by this project.

2) Grass-fed Beef Production Systems/Pasture Management - Don Nelson

Team includes: Jan Busboom, Mark Nelson, Shannon Neibergs, Kate Painter, Frank Hendrix, John Kugler, Steve Van Vleet, John Fouts, Tip Hudson, Zhihua Jiang and several faculty from the University of Nevada.

This project is especially timely, given the impact of grain prices since the movement to ethanol production.  This project is also in line with more sustainable livestock production practices, and is supportive to the efforts of CSANR and the development of locally grown food products and local marketing.

3) Food Safety:  A farm-to-table approach to reduce the risk of food-borne pathogens integrating outreach and applied research - Karen Killinger

Team includes: Andy Bary, Jan Busboom, Lynne Carpenter-Boggs, Craig Cogger, Susie Craig, Dick Dougherty, Zena Edwards, Joe Harrison, Dong-Hyum Kang, Carol Miles, Pius Ngedwa, Marcy Ostrom, Troy Peters, Jeremy Rentz, Jeff Ullman, and Tim Waters, along with collaborators from several state agencies, UI, OSU and a conservation district.

Given the incidence of food-borne diseases experienced in WA State, this project is critical to demonstrating WSU's commitment to this aspect of the WA State food system.  Helping ensure the safety of food is a vital aspect to maintaining the economic stability and well-being of the state's largest industry.

4) Online Master Gardener Training Program for WA State and a National Market - Cinde Johnson

Team includes:  Marianne Ophardt, Tonie Fitzgerald, Linda C-Scott, Dave Cillay, Art Antonelli, Mike Bush, Jenny Glass, Rich Koenig and a WSDA person

This project advances an important concept of how WSU Extension could approach delivery of learning to existing and emerging audiences of learners.  This model could also promote fee based learning for traditional programming, sales of learning modules to other universities and organizations, and would help demonstrate WSU Extension's commitment to digital communication technologies, organizational efficiency, and audience expansion to serve beyond the state's borders, including global audiences.

5) Interdisciplinary translational research to mitigate the impact of key fungal and viral diseases on the sustainability of wine grape and small fruit industries in WA State - Naidu Rayapati

Team includes: Gwen Alyn-Hoheisel, Dennis Brown, Dean Glawe, Gary Grove, Heather Johnson (SES), Don McMoran, Gary Moulton, Keith Pike, Doug Walsh and Tom Walters

The title of this project does not accurately depict the outreach impact of this team effort.  The project is learner-centered and utilizes web-based technologies to connect learners to an integrated information base.  The project will also produce a number of fact sheets and face to face seminars and workshops.  The project also contributes to graduate student education and, most importantly, integrates the effort across disciplines.  Accountability and assessment are defined and the project will serve a broad clientele across the state and beyond.

6) Protecting and enhancing WA's seed industry - Doug Walsh and Lindsey du Toit

Team includes: Tim Miller, Rick Boydston, Lyndon Porter, Ken Eastwell, Sally O'Neal Coates, Tim Waters, Don McMoran

This project addresses issues impacting production of seeds across several crops and involves faculty from a multitude of disciplines to bring assistance in an interdisciplinary manner to help protect and improve economic vitality of this aspect of the agricultural industry.  The team members have excellent credentials and credibility for delivering on this projected set of outcomes.

NAVY 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ANNOUNCES TWO POSITIONS
The Navy/4-H Youth Development Project is a collaboration between National 4-H Headquarters and U.S. Navy Headquarters Child and Youth Programs.  Our goal is to provide training and technical assistance to strengthen Navy Youth Programs and local 4-H/Navy partnerships.   Navy and 4-H staff will work together at the installation/county level to establish 4-H clubs for Navy youth.  The University of Hawaii has a Cooperative Agreement with CSREES to support this partnership and to enhance collaboration between Navy and 4-H colleagues in all states.

Two positions are available for qualified Extension youth development and technology professionals who are interested in working with Navy staff to support and expand opportunities for Navy children and in building lasting partnerships between Navy and 4-H programs.  One position is a “Navy/4-H Liaison” to focus on supporting 4-H programs for Navy youth and the other is a “Navy/4-H Youth Technology Specialist” position to integrate technology into youth programming on Navy installations.  Both positions are for one year and will be located at the Navy Headquarters Child and Youth Programs office in Millington, Tennessee.  The persons selected for these assignments must be employed by a Land Grant University and must have the commitment of the State 4-H Leader and Extension administrators to sub-contract with another university – the University of Hawaii – for their Navy 4-H YDP assignment and to continue their Extension employment for the duration of the assignment.

The position announcements can be found on the 4-H web page at  http://4h.wsu.edu.   Please pass along this announcement to qualified Extension professionals who might be interested in a valuable professional development experience with the Navy/4-H YDP. Qualified candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume to both Sharon Wright (swright@csrees.usda.gov) and Larrie’ Rodriguez (Larrie.Rodriguez@navy.mil) no later than 4 January 2008.    Please address any questions you have to Sharon Wright at swright@csrees.usda.gov.   Source:  Pat BoyEs

FIND OUT ABOUT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES VIA EMAIL - SIGN-UP ON OGRD MAILING LISTS
The Office of Grant and Research Development (OGRD) has established two mailing lists to aid your search for funding opportunities.  Obtaining a subscription to these lists through WSU’s Mailman List-serv is easy. Select the appropriate website and fill in the required information.

Limited Submission Funding Opportunities:
http://lists.wsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/limited_submission_opps
In Limited Submission Opportunities, the sponsor agency restricts the number of proposals an institution can submit.  In these cases, OGRD coordinates internal review panels to determine which proposal(s) will be submitted to the agency for competition.  As a member of this List-serv, you will receive email notifications of these opportunities when they open for competition.   If you have any questions regarding Limited Submissions please contact Lynn Fister at lafister@wsu.edu or Esther Pratt at estherpratt@wsu.edu

Office of Research Funding Opportunities: http://lists.wsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/funding_opps
This List-serv enables you to receive email notification of opportunities of interest or significant importance to the research community. Although some of these opportunities are available by checking the OGRD website, as a member of this List-serv, new opportunities will be emailed directly to you as they become available.

*NOTE:  These are NOT ALL the opportunities available. Sign up to receive a weekly email funding alert identifying new funding opportunities in your specific research focus area: www.cos.com. Keep your COS expertise profile updated so agencies and collaborators can find you. Contact Lynn Fister, lafister@wsu.edu or Esther Pratt, estherpratt@wsu.edu, if you need assistance using this valuable subscription service provided by the Office of Research.
