PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGARM PLANNING AND IMPACT WORKSHOP
On November 27th -- 29th, at WSU Spokane Professional Development is hosting a Program Planning, Evaluation and Impact Reporting Train-the-Trainer Workshop. Dr. Lydia Blaylock, Extension Evaluation Specialist will be conducting the training. Dr. Blaylock has trained in several states, most recently with University of Illinois Extension and following directly this training, University of Idaho Extension. The goal of the training is to build capacity in WSU Extension by developing a group of educators that will teach colleagues and serve as mentors regarding Program Planning, Evaluation and Impact Reporting. WSU OFFERS NEW FACULTY DIVERSITY AWARD
As a way to recognize WSU faculty members who advance diversity within our university and community, the Office of the Provost and The Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity have created the WSU Faculty Diversity Award. This award will be given on an annual basis to a faculty member who has demonstrated a significant commitment to diversity in their teaching, research, or community service. Nominations and applications are being accepted right now with the goal of honoring the first recipient during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation on January 19.
Nominations and applications for this Award can be made online by visiting http://www.thedivision.wsu.edu/. Detailed information regarding eligibility criteria is also available at this site. The deadline to submit is December 14, 2007. Questions can be directed to Alex Tan, alextan@wsu.edu.
KUDOS AND AWARDS TO MARKETING AND NEWS SERVICES
CAHNRS and WSU Extension Marketing and News Services took top honors in the 2007 MarCom Awards, sponsored by the national Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.
Connections magazine, which is sent to 20,000 CAHNRS and WSU Extension alumni, friends, faculty and staff received a platinum award, the organization’s top honor.
Extension Today, the three-times-a-year insert in WSU Today that features stories about WSU Extension educators and their programs, won a gold award.
The CAHNRS and WSU Extension Alumni and Friends web site, designed by Brian Clark, won an honorable mention in the competition, as did a recently produced viticulture and enology brochure entitled “Expect Perfect Pairings.”
The Marketing and News Services team includes Kathy Barnard, Dennis Brown, Brian Clark, Denny Fleenor, Samantha Graf, Phil Cable and Jeff Mannix. Lagene Taylor, Gerald Steffen and Dora Rollins from Extension Communications and Educational Support also contributed to these projects.

ANNOUNCING THE 4-H ART OF LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Join your colleagues for the 2008 4-H Art of Leadership program as part of the Current and Emerging Leadership Initiative in 4-H. This professional development opportunity February 19-21, 2008 in Tucson, AZ
is expressly for
- Individuals newly hired or assigned to a key leadership role in their state or across the 4-H system
- State 4-H Program Leaders with less than 5 years in their current position
The 4-H Art of Leadership program will give you an opportunity to reflect on your role as a leader in one of the largest youth development organizations in the U.S. You will assess your leadership skills and behaviors, and discover your role in 4-H not just today but into the future. This session will give you a rare opportunity: to personally reflect on your leadership and how you, together with other 4-H colleagues, can have an impact on the 4-H youth development system.
This inspiring—and fun—series will give you a fresh perspective and renewed energy for your work and the future of 4-H. Beginning in 2007, previous Art of Leadership participants will be eligible to apply and be selected to lead the program in the future.
You will leave the 4-H Art of Leadership program with:
- A better understanding of your role as a leader based on a 360 degree leadership assessment
- Strategies to refine your leadership skills and increase your capabilities to serve 4-H in the future
- Tools to expand your skills in people-management practices and leading change
- A sense of trust, cohesiveness and teamwork among new colleagues across the 4-H system
Length of Sessions: Session One begins on Tuesday morning and ends at Thursday noon. Session Two begins on Monday morning and ends at Thursday noon.

Costs: Registration for the Art of leadership is $425 per person for each of the two sessions (total of $850). Estimated expenses for personal travel, lodging, pre-and post meeting travel meals, and incidentals per session are $1,200 per session or $2,400 for both sessions (over two fiscal years). The purpose of the “Current and Emerging 4-H Leadership Development” plan is to accelerate the development of current leaders and prepare emerging leaders by engaging them in concentrated learning experiences to bring strength and vision to 4-H youth development in the future.
SARE CONFERENCE
The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) 20th Anniversary New American Farm conference will be held in Kansas City on March 25-27, 2008. This is a great opportunity to network with individuals with interests in sustainable agriculture and to learn about the ‘ins and outs’ of marketing and production, participate in local farm tours to see sustainable agriculture at work, interact with state-of-the-art researchers and innovators, explore SARE grant opportunities and plan for the future of SARE. Linda will be out on Family Medical leave Monday and mixed schedule through the remainder of the week, TBA.
John will be in the office on Monday, Thursday and Friday. On Tuesday and Wednesday he will participate in the tour with President Floyd to Walla Walla.
