Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:
COMPARING HI-TECH AMBITIONS
John Gardner, Vice President, Economic Development and Extension, and colleagues recently traveled to San Diego, Salt Lake City, and Atlanta TO observe economic development efforts in three other U.S. geographic regions. Organized by the WA state Senate Committee on Economic Development, Trade and Management. To learn what they observed, read John’s November 1 “blog” http://www.gardner.wsu.edu/?p=53
CONTRIBUTORS TO DIVERSITY MAGAZINE SOUGHT
The Communications Office in The Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity has begun work on the annual Equity and Diversity Insight Magazine. This Magazine showcases WSU’s equity and diversity successes on all four campuses. Steve Nakata and Christy Fitzgerald welcome story ideas and seek people willing to write for the Magazine. Last year’s edition was good, in large part, because of the diversity of writers that contributed to it. The deadline to receive articles is Monday, November 19. It is preferred that articles are kept within 300 words in length—so we are not looking for long, detailed documents. This is a perfect opportunity to highlight a new program or service, share the impact of current programs, or feature alumni doing incredible things. Contact Steve Nakata, 509-335-1774, nakata@wsu.edu or Christy Fitzgerald, 509-335-2225, christyf@wsu.edu, for more information.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR TRIBAL PUBLICATION (CORRECTION)
We are in the process of updating the publication titled "Washington Tribal Nations and Washington State University Extension-A Summary of Activity" (MISC0525).
If you have delivered an educational program to a Washington Tribal Nation or have partnered with them in a grant or other educational program during the past calendar year and can report a measurable outcome of this effort, please send Blair Wolfley, wolfleyb@wsu.edu, information about the project or program by December 20, 2007.
Please send your submission either in the body of an email or as an
attachment saved as a Microsoft Word document. Please DO NOT send hard copy, as we will need to edit your submission and send it to a designer for inclusion in the final composite document.
In your statement please focus on the impact of your educational efforts. We are not interested in simply reporting activity. And if you are located in a county office, please send a copy of what you send to Blair to your District Director as well.
A submission form, with guidelines for your submission, is available on line at: http://eces.wsu.edu/print/published/forms.htm
If you have not seen the 2006 edition of this publication and would like to see examples of the type of information reported in it, you can download a PDF file of this publication from our website at:
http://pubs.wsu.edu/cgi-bin/pubs/MISC0525.html
Once again, the deadline for submission is December 20.
TWO EXTENSION FACULTY RECEIVE LETTER OF COMMENDATION
Congratulations to Carol Miles, Associate Scientist, WSU Mount Vernon, and Andy McGuire, Area Extension Educator, Grant County, who recently received a letter of commendation from the National Director of USDA/CSREES Sustainable Agriculture! Only a very few state coordinators receive letters of recognition on meritorious effort. Carol and Andy’s work in the area of sustainable agriculture in Washington has helped shape extension education and farmer-rancher programs, and elevated awareness of sustainable agriculture at both regional and national levels.

TIPS FOR VIDEOCONFERENCING
Using WECN (Washington Extension Conferencing Network) is second nature to many of us. However, there are some basics that many overlook in using the technology to our advantage. Thanks to Randy Cross and Shane Barrett, there is a new Best Practices Manual http://wecn.wsu.edu/WECN%20Best%20Practices.pdf to guide you in the use of WECN. You can access the Manual from the Extension Faculty and Staff web page http://ext.wsu.edu/fs/
