King County Executive Ron Sims will make a presentation on “Regional Solutions to Global Climate Change” on Friday, November 16th at 3:00 pm. The presentation will be available via video stream at http://eces.wsu.edu/video/stream.html. There will be an opportunity to ask Mr. Sims questions live either from the studio audience in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Bldg. Room T-101, or via technology. DEANS FOX AND BERNARDO APPOINT WATER RESOUCE MANAGEMENT TASK FORCE
A relatively abundant water supply has been one of the key drivers of economic growth in the state of Washington over the last century. However, issues around water scarcity and competing uses for available water supplies have been a source of political, economic, and environmental debate during this period, and it is likely that these issues will become even more acute in the years to come. WSU Extension and CAHNRS must be prepared to provide objective, research-based information to assist the state in addressing its water resource challenges.
WSU has a rich tradition of water resources research and educational programming. Unfortunately, past budget cuts and the pursuit of other priorities have reduced our efforts in this area. While several excellent research and extension faculty, staff, and programs devoted to water resource management are in place, they are currently distributed across several units and not particularly well integrated.
In order to integrate WSU Extension and CAHNRS efforts to address water-resource challenges, a task force has been created. The members of the task force are:
- Claudio O. Stockle, Department of Biological Systems Engineering, Chair
- Michael E. Barber, Director, State of Washington Water Research Center
- Markus Flury, Department of Crop and Soil Sciences
- Ray G. Huffaker, School of Economic Sciences
Patricia B. Pearson, Water Quality Educator, Jefferson County
FIRST ANNUAL WSU “IMAGINE TOMORROW” INITIATIVE UNDERWAY
The first annual WSU “Imagine Tomorrow” initiative to showcase a high school poster competition is underway. This year’s event is titled POWER YOUR FUTURE. It is a high school competition aimed at multidisciplinary teams involving sustainable technologies broadly arranged around energy and CO2 emissions and other similar challenges. The event will culminate with an on-campus review of projects May 9-11, 2008. Judges and resource persons (and sponsors) are currently being solicited. Please send to high school age youth collaborators in your county/community. Check out: http://imagine.wsu.edu/
WASHINGTON STATE IMPACTS WEB SITE UPDATE
The Washington State Impacts web site was recently moved into an Extension template. Some recent reports include digital images and a slide show of some of the images plays on the main page. Visit the site at http://ext.wsu.edu/IMPACT/ Thanks to Phil Cable, Brian Clark and Dennis Brown in Marketing and News Services for their work on this project.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF EXTENSION
The new hard copy publication “Economic Benefits of WSU Extension” has been developed into a web version http://ext.wsu.edu/economicbenefits/index.html This is not a pdf of the publication but an interactive web site highlighting the program outcomes in community development, engineering, energy, agriculture, marine resources, sustainable development, and access to higher education. In addition you will find the bar-chart and pie-charts depicting “Who Funds Extension in WA State” http://ext.wsu.edu/economicbenefits/funds.html. Thank you Phillip Cable for your design work.
NEW MARKETING POSTERS NOW AVAILABLE!
How better to highlight the important work of WSU Extension than to highlight the people doing that work? Now, you can feature some of our organization’s most effective educators on the walls of your office, hallway or conference room with new marketing posters developed from the first WSU Extension photo shoot held earlier this year. You can purchase framed versions of any or all of the posters at http://ext.wsu.edu/marketing/posters.htm. We will take orders until Nov. 15; posters should be delivered by mid-December.
Another set of posters based on the second photo shoot will be available by the end of December.
VIOLENCE PREVENTION PRESENTATION AVAILABLE ON DVD
WSU Extension, the Department of Human Development and the Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service recently co-sponsored a seminar on the Pullman campus presented by Dr. Kenneth Dodge from Duke University. Dr. Dodge is a nationally known prevention researcher. His presentation was titled “Framing Public Policy and Prevention in Youth Violence.” The presentation reviewed results from Fast Track, a violence prevention program targeting high risk children. Dr. Dodge is a leader of the research team that has collected over ten years of data documenting which interventions appear most promising in reducing the risks of violent behavior. Although the quality of the taping was not adequate for videostreaming, two DVDs are available on loan for Extension educators interested in reviewing the presentation. Please contact either Louise Parker (parker@wsu.edu) or Laura Hill (laurahill@wsu.edu) if you are interested in checking out one of the DVDs.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR TRIBAL PUBLICATION
We are in the process of updating the publication titled "Washington Tribal Nations and Washington State University Extension-A Summary of Activity" (MISC0525).
If you have delivered an educational program to a Washington Tribal Nation or have partnered with them in a grant or other educational program during the past calendar year and can report a measurable outcome of this effort, please send me information about the project or program by December 20, 2007.
Please send your submission either in the body of an email or as an
attachment saved as a Microsoft Word document. Please DO NOT send hard copy, as we will need to edit your submission and send it to a designer for inclusion in the final composite document.
In your statement please focus on the impact of your educational efforts. We are not interested in simply reporting activity. And if you are located in a county office, please send a copy of what you send me to your District Director as well.
A submission form, with guidelines for your submission, is available on line at: http://eces.wsu.edu/print/published/forms.htm
If you have not seen the 2006 edition of this publication and would like to see examples of the type of information reported in it, you can download a PDF file of this publication from our website at:
http://pubs.wsu.edu/cgi-bin/pubs/MISC0525.html
Once again, the deadline for submission is December 20.

NATIONAL NEEDS-BASED COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE
eXtension is ready to move to the next phase of establishing national needs-based Communities of Practice. The regional aggregation of CoP priorities produced 22 CoP recommendations, which may be reviewed at: http://about.extension.org/wiki/Regional_CoP_Priorities_2007
Of those submitted priorities, the following have been selected for development as national Communities of Practice.
- Living with Fire (Western Region lead)
- Water Quality (North Central Region lead)
- Obesity/Health Wellness (Southern Region lead)
- Small Ruminants (1890 Region lead)
- Renewable Energy (Northeast Region lead)
The Governing Committee approved these priority recommendations at their October 11 meeting. Now, each region has the opportunity to lead a process that will result in the development of a fully functioning national CoP that addresses a defined audience (Community of Interest) important to Cooperative Extension.
Even though your region may not have identified all of these CoPs in your regions top priorities, now is an opportunity to add participants from your region. Using the URL listed above, please review the names of participants we have collected thus far. Please email additional names and contact information to Carla Craycraft at carla.craycraft@extension.org.
A couple of key deadlines should be mentioned. Each needs-based CoP will be asked to submit a letter of intent by December 4. The letter should include key CoP goals, objectives, a list of CoP leaders and the Community of Interest to be served. After receiving feedback from the CoP Review Panel, a full proposal will be due January 25.
eXtension will provide, at no cost to the priority-based CoPs, access to the eXtension Web Conference Center for hosting meetings and discussions. Also, up to $10,000 will be available to each CoP to assist them in the development of a successful application. Resources may be used to reimburse travel costs for any face-to-face work meetings the CoP deems necessary. Any unused funding will be credited to the CoP once their CoP application is approved. This will be in addition to the $50,000 of start-up funding the CoP will be eligible to receive.
For more information related to this process, the five needs-based CoPs, timelines or the CoP application, please link to the URL listed above. Thank you for your support and may all of our collaborative work result in the development of five new fully functioning national CoPs.
