Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

WSU MEETING THE NEEDS OF ANIMAL AGRICULTURE
Sixteen county faculty and staff, alongside 14 department faculty in Animal Sciences (AS), spent two days January 3 and 4 together in a retreat in Pullman. The goals were to build a stronger relationship between on campus and off campus faculty and a change to identify big picture clientele needs based on the needs assessment study. Congratulations to the planning committee Jan Busboon, Charlie Gaskins, John Winder and others who helped pull together the agenda and speakers. The entire two days was facilitated by Emmett Fiske, Extension specialist, Community and Rural Sociology. I was pleased to spend the first day with the group and witness first-hand the energized faculty who were clearly excited about forging our future direction in Extension animal agriculture. We were all pleased that the incoming new chair for the Animal Sciences department, Margaret Benson was also present, taking the time to come from Michigan State University to participate in the planning session. Dr. Benson begins her new role as AS Chair on February 1.

There were many highlights to the program. For example, results of a needs assessment online survey was presented by Shannon Neibergs, Extension livestock economist, SE District and School of Economic Sciences. Watch for follow up survey information from Shannon. Other sessions included:

  • Statewide Small Farms Livestock Programming, Terry Swaggerty, Stevens County
  • BIOAg Livestock Programming, Lynne Carpenter-Boggs, BIOAg Coordinator,
  • Youth Programming and Opportunities for Student Recruitment, Pat BoyEs, 4-H Director.

Areas of Excellence and Opportunities for Collaboration presentations by team representatives:

  • Genetics and Molecular Biology (AS) – Holly Neibergs
  • Farm Management and Marketing (EXT) – Tom Platt
  • Reproduction (AS) – Derek McLean
  • Quality Assurance and Value Added Marketing (EXT) – Jan Busboom
  • Nutrient Management and Environment Research (AS) – Kris Johnson
  • Nutrient Management and the Environment (EXT) – Tip Hudson
  • Animal Products and Growth (AS) – Jason Mann
  • Making the Most of Grass (EXT) – W. Frank Hendrix
  • Meeting the Needs of Western Washington Producers (EXT) – Michael Hackett
  • Animal Behavior and Welfare Research and Issues (AS) – Ruth Newberry
  • Dairy Effic., PNW Swine Program & Animal Ag. Systems (AS) – John McNamara
  • Animal Health Issues and Field Disease Investigative Unit (FDIU) Developments (AS/FDIU) - Larry Fox

Time was also spent answering the bigger picture questions: Where do we go from here? What are the programming areas that are critical to the survival/success of clientele and Extension?

Congratulations to all those involved. A great example of pulling together departmental and county/area faculty for program sharing and planning. I hope this is the first of many.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DEPENDENTS OF WSU FACULTY AND STAFF
As high school seniors are getting ready to apply for college, this is a reminder about the $1,000 scholarship available to dependents of qualifying faculty and staff. This scholarship is also available to qualifying county-paid Extension staff and qualifying USDA ARS employees.

The scholarships are for entering, full-time, undergraduate students who have not exceeded age 25. Spouses are not eligible. Continuing undergraduate students who have not yet received the award are also eligible. The awards are renewable for a second year, if the student is making satisfactory progress towards a degree and has a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above at WSU.

Only dependents of the following are eligible:
WSU classified staff members holding half time or greater appointments and having permanent status or on trial service.
Faculty and A/P employees holding half time or greater appointments.
County-paid staff members having permanent status and working half time or more for WSU Extension.
USDA ARS paid employees having permanent status and working half time or more.
Application for this should be made at the same time as application for admission. Applications must be made on the WSU Application for Academic Scholarships form. This is available on the WSU website at:
https://www.it.wsu.edu/AIS/SIC/cgi-bin/schol_app.cgi or from the Applications menu on the financial aid web page at http://www.finaid.wsu.edu/scholar

This application covers a long list of scholarships, and all students interested in scholarship support should submit it each year. This year s deadline for the 2007-2008 Academic Scholarship Application is January 31, 2007, which is the same as the admissions priority deadline. If you have questions, contact the Office of Scholarship Services (509) 335-1059.

Students who qualified during 2006-2007, but did not apply may still do so by contacting the Office of Scholarship Services and requesting a paper copy of the application.

On the application the question "Do you have a parent who works for Washington State University?" requires a yes answer as well as the name and department of the qualifying parent.

County-paid employees with dependents applying for this scholarship must apply for "public affiliate status" with the university. Contact Becky Priebe at priebeb@wsu.edu or (509) 335-2842.

NOMINATIONS FOR THE CAHNRS WOMEN'S HISTORY RECOGNITION AWARD
The CAHNRS Women's History Recognition Award Committee welcomes you to nominate a graduate from the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences for one of this year's CAHNRS Women's History Recognition Awards. There are two awards given each year, one recognizing a graduate for community leadership and public service, the other recognizes professional and academic leadership.

Please nominate a woman whom you believe represents the qualities embodied in a graduate from CAHNRS at Washington State University. Nominations do not have to come from an academic unit and we encourage the many groups that have outstanding graduates working with them to nominate those individuals.

The nominations will be accepted until Friday, January 12, 2007. Forms can be found at http://www.cahealumni.wsu.edu/calendar/index.htm. If you have any questions, please contact, Bob Krikac, at rkrikac@wsu.edu or Britta Nitcy at nitcy@wsu.edu. We look forward to your nominations of our outstanding graduates.
