His office is located on the WSU Tri-Cities Campus in Richland. He comes from the University of Missouri – Columbia, where he was the coordinator of the Community Food Systems and Sustainable Agriculture Program and an Extension Assistant Professor in Rural Sociology. He partnered with farmer groups, Latino farmers and workers, grass roots organizations, state and federal agencies, and other Universities to serve the Latino community in Missouri.
José finished his Ph.D. in Agricultural Extension and Education at the University of Minnesota and his MS in Farming Systems Research and Extension at the University of Florida. He was the program coordinator of the “University of Minnesota Migrant Project”, and worked in various countries in Latin America.
Be looking for opportunities to interact with Jose in the district “Meet and Greet” events that are being scheduled for this fall (October and November.) During these events participants will have the opportunity to meet Jose, hear his hopes about Latino programming in WA state and share what programs are currently being conducted. More details coming soon. In the meanwhile, José can be contacted at garciajl@wsu.edu or 509-372-7389
YOUR INPUT SOUGHT ON SURVEY TO HELP REFRESH WSU GOALS
WSU’s strategic plan is due for review, and initial comments are being solicited through the end of September. The survey will help refresh WSU goals. This is your opportunity to provide direct feedback regarding strategic goals. The four strategic goals under review are:
- Offer the best undergraduate experience in a research university
- Nurture a world-class environment for research, scholarship, graduate
education, the arts and engagement
- Create an environment of trust and respect in all we do
- Develop a culture of shared commitment to quality in all of our activities
The brief online survey asks questions such as whether the plan has been useful, whether or not it should be updated and, if so, how. The survey can be found online at http://CTLSilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/ZS67806. It is also accessible from the provost’s website online at http://www.provost.wsu.edu. “This is an opportunity for anyone who is interested to participate,” said Mary Doyle, vice provost for academic planning, budget and resource management. “We’re looking for thoughts and ideas from across the university.” (Source: WSU Today, August 31, 2007)

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
30 MINUTE SESSIONS
This month we are offering "30 Minute Sessions" on some new topics such as Second Life, Slideshare, AJAX and Developing Quality Web Content. Give us 30 minutes and we'll teach you something useful! These sessions will be held at our Web Conferencing Center at http://connect.extension.iastate.edu/learn and your telephone. Plan to join the session 5 minutes before the starting time. Each session will be held at 12:00n PT unless otherwise noted.
Sept 11 at 12 n PT, a "30 Minute Session" Introduction to Second Life by Vishal Singh, UNL, Vice Chair - ACE IT SIG. Multi-user virtual environments such as Second Life (http://www.secondlife.com/) are growing in popularity. Learn what Second Life is and how it is being used. Some experts have predicted that 80 percent of active internet users will be using this type of environment by the end of 2011! Why not spend just a half hour in 2007 to learn more about it so you're better prepared!
Sept 12 at 12n PT, a "30 Minute Session" - Social Bookmarking by Kevin Gamble. Social Bookmarking as a collaborative tool -- how to keep your work team on the same page without burying them in email. Participants will be exposed to several social bookmarking tools with an emphasis on del.icio.us (for all Extension).
Sept 20 at 12n PT, a "30 Minute Session" on Using Slideshare for Collaboration and Online Learning, by Kevin Gamble. Slideshare (slideshare.net) is sort of like a YouTube for sharing presentations. Agents and specialists are always looking for a way to share their slideshows, and Slideshare is an easy, powerful, and free solution. It's also an effective environment for fostering online learning. This session will show you everything you need to know to get started with Slideshare, and discuss how this technology can be used for collaborative work across the Cooperative Extension System.
Sept 26 at 12n PT, a "30 Minute Session" on AJAX: Cleaning up your Web Applications and Reducing User Clicks, by Aaron Hundley. Many users today are preferring websites that provide information faster with a minimum amount of work necessary. Over the years, with the constant rise in bandwidth availability, internet users have became progressively impatient when browsing websites. Many users may simply give up on websites that take too long or direct them to too many pages. AJAX is a mechanism that gives users almost instant availability of information when it is requested within web pages without having to redirect the user to new pages. This presentation will focus on familiarizing the audience with AJAX and it's different uses in web applications.
Sept 27 at 12n PT, a "30 Minute Session" on Developing Quality Web Content, by Craig Wood. Do you need to understand how people read Web pages? Should you concentrate on style or format, structure, redundancy, how search engines work, links to other sites?

Sept. 6 at 12n PT, Planning for Extension in SL -- Cooperative Extension in Second Life Round Table.
