US EPA TARGETED WATERSHED INITIATIVE GRANTS VIDEOCONFERENCE
Join us on Wednesday, October 17, 2007, 9:00 - 11:30 AM (PDT), Satellite and Video Stream http://eces.wsu.edu/video/stream.html
Have you ever wondered how to get two, or even three conflicting interest groups to sit down together and find areas of joint concern? The sixth Watershed Issues Series gives a glimpse into the approaches of three partnerships that found that common ground and now are making a difference in the water quality in their streams. Dedicated landowners, fishermen, timber owners, and ranchers have met at tables in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington found those common interests and are working toward sustainable industries and habitat futures. US EPA's Targeted Watershed Initiative Grant, is the focus of the workshop.
The Grant, first awarded in 2001, was highly competitive and demanding. Awardees had to have had working partnerships before application, projects that could show real progress within the first year of funding were crucial and multi-jurisdictional partnerships required. Each of the Northwest groups included local non-profits, Tribal governments, Conservation Districts or NRCS, the Forest Service, and watershed councils at the planning table.
Clark Fork - Pend Oreille watershed in Washington, Idaho and Montana was among the first awardees in 2001, citing water quality improvement as their goal. Oregon's Siuslaw River, 2003 awardees, issues centered on century-old farming and forestry practices that impacted salmon habitat. The Skagit River Partnership in northwestern Washington is a collaboration of farmers, dairymen, and tribal fisherman who are working on projects that will add sustainability to all of their pursuits.
The workshop will be available by video stream and satellite downlink http://eces.wsu.edu/video/stream.html. For further information, please contact Jan Seago at seago.jan@epa.gov or 206.553.0038.
WA HERITAGE BARN REGISTER
Created with the passage of SHB 2115 in May of 2007 http://www.dahp.wa.gov/pages/HistoricSites/BarnBill.htm, the Washington Heritage Barn Register commemorates barns as historically significant resources representing the agricultural, economic and cultural development of the State of Washington.
“Barns are a symbol of Washington’s agricultural heritage and are beautiful buildings in their own right,” said Governor Chris Gregoire. “The Heritage Barn register will support the efforts of the Washingtonians who own these barns to preserve and stabilize these icons of our history.”
The legislation essentially does two things: 1. creates the Heritage Barn Register – owners can nominate their historic barns to be designated as official Heritage Barns; and 2. provides matching grants to owners of designated Heritage Barns for projects aimed at the stabilization and rehabilitation of the historic structures.
There are three important dates associated with program:
Oct. 1 is the deadline for barn owners to submit nomination forms
Nov. 2 is when a committee will designate eligible barns as Heritage Barns
Nov. 30 is the tentative deadline for submitting grant application forms
It is important to keep in mind that only designated Heritage Barns are eligible to apply for grant funds. Thus, barn owners interested in applying for grants must be sure to nominate their barns by the Oct. 1, 2007 deadline.
Please visit the Dept. of Archaeology & Historic Preservation website at http://www.dahp.wa.gov/pages/HistoricSites/HeritageBarnRegister.htm to find a press release about the program, a one-page info sheet, and the Heritage Barn Nomination Form.

WEAR CRIMSON AND GRAY ON COLLEGE COLORS DAY, AUG. 31
Washington State University will celebrate College Colors Day Aug. 31. Alumni, students and university employees can show their school spirit by dressing in the crimson and gray colors. Gov. Christine Gregoire signed a proclamation July 23 making the date an official observance day for supporters of colleges and universities state-wide. Washington state residents are encouraged by Gregoire's proclamation to wear apparel representing their favorite college or university.
College Colors Day coincides with "back to school" and the kick-off of intercollegiate athletics nationwide.
For the third year, College Colors Day seeks to celebrate and promote the traditions and spirit of the college experience, and strives to promote higher education by increasing public awareness and celebrating the achievements of colleges and universities in the U.S. For more information, visit www.collegecolorsday.com.

OFFICE OF ALUMNI AND DEVELOPMENT NAME CHANGE AND NEW ALUMNI AND FRIENDS WEBSITE UNVEILED
The new Alumni and Friends website has been unveiled. This new site does some important things: thanking people for their gifts, keeping them connected, allowing them to provide input on important issues like student recruitment and events. Most importantly, this site is designed to show the impact that private giving has on the important work that we do, because gifts really do change lives. Check out our new website at http://www.cahnrsalumni.wsu.edu
Along with the development of the new website, the Office of Alumni and Development is excited to announce a name change to the Office of Alumni and Friends. This more clearly reflects our commitment to the needs of WSU Extension along with the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences.
WELCOME LINDA BAILEY AND JENNIFER OLEGARIO TO DEVELOPMENT TEAM
Linda Bailey began on August 1 in the CAHNRS and Extension Alumni and Development unit and will be taking the lead for alumni relations and events. She has (had to) hit the ground running with a number of important events. CAHNRS and Extension are hosting 3 “President Associates” events during the football season for donors of $1,000 or more. She’s supporting Rich Hines on the event at Benaroya Hall on September 6th. The Orvil A. Vogel Plant BioSciences Building dedication on September 15th will be a “signature” event for us – featuring President Floyd and other dignitaries. Linda is a graduate of Eastern Washington University, and is married to St. John area farmer and rancher Gary Bailey. Two of their three sons are Cougs. You can contact Linda at 335.7772 or lmbailey@wsu.edu
Jennifer Olegario will be an assistant development director located at WSU West with some specific assignments such as the Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles (AMDT) and Interior Design departments. She started with WSU on Monday, August 6th and THAT DAY toured the Nordstrom corporate offices and met some key leaders of the company along with the new chair of AMDT. Jennifer is a graduate of Syracuse University with dual majors in Public Relations and International Relations. She spent a majority of her previous career serving as a corporate media spokesperson for Wall Street firms. A native New Yorker, Jennifer moved to Seattle a little over two years ago, and established a successful company which she sold within a week after agreeing to work for WSU. Her phone extension is 206-219-2409 and email is olegario@wsu.edu
Please join all of us at CAHNRS and WSU Extension Office of Alumni and Friends in welcoming Linda and Jennifer to the team.
Rich Hines will be taking an extended leave following the event at Benaroya Hall through December to complete a memoir of “Growing up Chinese in Montana.” We’re very excited for Rich to fulfill this long-held goal and will be sure to keep you updated when the book is published!
