CONFERENCING UPDATE
As previously announced, the Extension Meeting Management and Program Support (EMMPS) unit will be discontinued at the end of the calendar year (2007). We are working closely with the Center for Distance and Professional Education (CDPE) to assure that conference support functions are available for appropriate Extension programs in the future. We have taken two steps in close cooperation with CDPE to support future collaboration on conference activities. First, a steering committee made up of both WSU Extension and CDPE personnel has been established to help evaluate new projects and to advise CDPE about the conferencing needs of WSU Extension. Additionally, Susan Butts will transfer from EMMPS to CDPE to aid in this transition. Susan will continue to support projects that are currently in her portfolio at EMMPS (currently being planned). Other EMMPS staff will similarly support other conferences that will be delivered before the end of the year.
We will be working closely with the Professional Education unit within CDPE and the new steering committee to assure that all appropriate conferences under planning for 2008 and beyond effectively transfer to the Professional Education unit.

DISTANCE EDUCATION TRAINING IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT SKILLS
The North Central Regional Center for Rural Development is offering a 7-part series on "Understanding Communities and their Dynamics." This distance education training focuses on the ability to understand community of place, the nature of public issues, the dynamics and interdependencies of the various segments of the community, and the basics of community development work. The series is the first component of the "Foundations of Practice: Community Development Core Competencies for Extension Professionals," a professional development framework developed by leading extension professionals to provide a common language and understanding of community development work. The 1-1/2 hour sessions are available through Breeze technology. Registration is now available for the fall 2007 series, which starts in mid-September and runs seven consecutive weeks. For more information visit the NCRCRD web site, http://www.ncrcrd.iastate.edu/projects/corecomp/component1-fall2007.htm or contact Janet Ayres at ayres@purdue.edu, professor of agricultural economics, Department of Agricultural Economics, Purdue University.
