Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:
PRESIDENT FLOYD LAUNCHES ONLINE COLUMN
On July 11, President Elson S. Floyd launched the inaugural issue of an online column titled Perspectives.
The president will use the column to keep the WSU community and its various constituency groups up to date on university decisions and initiatives.
In his first column, Floyd discusses an initiative in which the College of Veterinary Medicine would create a School of Global Animal Health. To read the column, click on the following link to Perspectives at www.wsu.edu/president/perspectives.
Appropriate Titles for WSU Extension Leadership
As you are well aware, there have been several recent changes with the senior leadership at WSU. Among these is the addition of a new Vice President for Economic Development and Extension, John C. Gardner. It is also important to note that Linda Kirk Fox's title will also change to reflect her affiliation with this new position. In order to avoid confusion among internal and external stakeholders, it is important that we be consistent in referencing the title of WSU Extension leadership. The proper titles are listed below.
John C. Gardner, Vice President for Economic Development and Extension
Linda Kirk Fox, Associate Vice President and Dean, Washington State University Extension
John A. Winder, Associate Dean and Associate Director, Washington State University Extension

WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REQUESTING ASSISTANCE ON Nuisance Bird Control Operations
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) is requesting assistance from WSDA in contacting facilities that might be involved in bird control operations. Local Health Departments have been receiving more frequent calls from the public about bird die-offs. With wide-spread publicity about Avian Flu and West Nile Virus the public understandably becomes concerned when they see dead birds, even when they are pest birds such as starlings. When County Health Departments are not aware of bird control operations that are occurring they cannot confidently tell callers that the dead birds are a result of a targeted control program. For this reason WSDA is requesting that facilities notify the local health department in advance of bird control operations.
Facilities that control nuisance birds with baits must recognize the unique conditions created by their operation. Most labels of bird control pesticides require applicators to collect dead birds in the area after the baits have been set out. WSDA expects applicators to comply with that requirement, however, we also understand that not all dead birds will be found, and some birds may die out of the baiting area. Since the nature of bird control operations makes it very difficult to completely comply with this label requirement, it is incumbent upon the applicator to ensure that undiscovered dead birds do not generate undue concern by the public. A good way to accomplish that is to inform the County Health Department of your intended operation before you begin.
To find the appropriate number to call for the area of your baiting operation, use the URL http://www.doh.wa.gov/LHJMap/LHJMap.htm which opens a state map with each jurisdiction identified. Then just click on the appropriate Local Health Jurisdiction and follow directions to the Environmental Health program’s main phone number.
Also be aware that local jurisdictions, though not regulating pesticide applications per se, may have statutes that affect your operation. For further information contact the WSDA Compliance Program toll free at (877) 301-4555, or DOH at (888) 586-9427.
The WSU Organic Farm Field Day and Resource Fair

The goals of the resource fair are to contribute to a shorter distance between the producer and consumer, increase knowledge of food systems and empower people to be informed and engaged members of the food politic. It will provide a networking opportunity for local groups to get together and highlight the network of sustainable agriculture on the Palouse. Some of the organizations that will be on hand: Backyard Harvest, Cultivating Success Program, Moscow Community Gardens, Pullman Community Gardens at Koppel Farm, Rural Roots, UI & WSU Small Farms Teams & UI Soil Stewards.
