Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:
NEW UNITS AND MOVES: “MARKETING NEWS SERVICES“ AND “EXTENSION
COMMUNICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT”
In an effort to maintain the momentum we're gaining with our
communications initiatives and in anticipation of WSU's forthcoming
capital campaign, Dean Bernardo and I have agreed to develop
a new, separate organizational unit to focus on these important
areas. CAHNRS and WSU Extension "Marketing and News Services" will
be open for business May 1.
Kathy Barnard, currently a senior public relations specialist
for our organization, will lead the new unit. Her title will
be Director of Marketing and News Services, jointly reporting
to Deans Bernardo and Fox. Her team will include our fine veteran
news writers Dennis Brown and Denny Fleenor, who works out
of Seattle, as well as Brian Clark.
In addition, the CAHNRS Information Department will become
the newly titled "Extension Communications and Educational
Support." That unit will include the following functions:
- Printing and publishing
- Video and multimedia
- Computer system and Web resources
- Conferences and events
Scott Fedale will be the director, and the unit will report
directly to me, dean and director of Extension, also effective
May 1. The realignment does not eliminate or segregate any
staff or their functions from the expectation of providing
services to CAHNRS and Extension administrators, faculty and
staff.
Also effective May 1, Mary Hoffman will have a new title as
Director of Budget and Business Operations, 100% Extension.
The Grants team, Esther Tate, Joan Root and Jennifer Jansen
will report directly to Mary.
As part of this effort, some location changes will be taking
place. Here are the new locations for those affected:
From 4th Floor to 2nd Floor Hulbert Hall:
Kathy Barnard – Hulbert 223C
Dennis Brown – Hulbert 223B
From 2nd Floor to 3rd Floor Hulbert:
Brooke Hicks, Center to Bridge the Digital Divide (CBDD) – Hulbert
305C Colleen Taugher, CBDD – Hulbert 305C
From 3rd Floor to 4th Floor Hulbert:
Bob Hoffmann – Hulbert 401G
Leila Styer – Hulbert 401F
Matthew Mayer – Hulbert 301H
Phone numbers and email addresses will not change.
GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR SUSTAINING AGRICULTURE
Applications are now available for more than $2 million in
grants focusing on research and education to sustain agriculture
in the West. The grants, from the Western Sustainable Agriculture
Research and Education (SARE) program, are awarded competitively
after a technical review. Those eligible to apply include ag
producers and individuals from universities, farm support agencies,
agri-businesses and nonprofit organizations. This year's requests
for applications and grant deadlines can be obtained from the
Western SARE Web site, http://wsare.usu.edu,
by calling (435) 797-2257 or by emailing
wsare@ext.usu.edu.
The grants typically explore, develop or promote some aspect
of agricultural sustainability, which embraces profitable farms
and ranches, a healthy environment and strong families and
communities.
Phil Rasmussen, Western region coordinator, said that since
the program was begun in 1988, Western SARE has distributed
more than $40 million in competitive grants to nearly 1,000
recipients in the region.
Western SARE, administered through Utah State University,
is one of four regions of SARE under the U.S. Department of
Agriculture. The Western region includes 13 states and four
U.S. Pacific island protectorates. Source: Andy McGuire, Western

NATIONAL DIVERSITY CONFERENCE A SUCCESS
Congratulations to Mary Katherine Dean and all the members
of the planning committee for a very successful National Diversity
Conference which we hosted in Seattle this week. There were
over 60 participants from WSU on the participants list; and
that might be a low number of WSU attendees representing county
and area Extension educators as well as WSU Pullman and WSU
Vancouver campus attendees. The presentation materials will
be posted on the conference web site http://www.emmps.wsu.edu/ndc/ in the near future.
The keynote speaker Kenji Yoshino provided an impactful, honest
and informative kick off to the conference. He spoke from his
book “Covering: The hidden assault on our Civil Rights” www.creativewell.com.
Thanks to all the presenters and to the planning committee:
