REGENTS SCHOLARS AND STUDENT FINANCIAL SUPPORT
WSU recently announced 255 Regents Scholars for the coming year and again this is an extraordinary group of students nominated from 167 high schools across the state. To qualify, students must have a GPA of 3.80 or higher; and score at least 1200 on the SAT, 26 on the ACT, or 180 on the PSAT. Nominees are judged on academic performance, leadership capability, and community and extracurricular involvement. I'm proud to say there are ten 4-H members among the Regents Scholars.

WSU has also unveiled a sweeping new scholarship program for fall 2007 - the Cougar Achievement Scholarship Program http://www.wsutoday.wsu.edu/completestory.asp?StoryID=3406 - that makes a world-class university education accessible to every Washington resident. One key component is the new program called Cougar Commitment that promises WSU will cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees for students who are from low- and middle-income families and meet State Need Grant or Pell Grant Criteria. This applies to all campuses and to both freshmen and transfer students.

CSANR RECOGNIZED FOR 15 YEARS OF PROGRESS
I had the pleasure of attending the Advisory Council meeting for the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources (CSANR) http://csanr.wsu.edu/ this week in Ellensburg. As usual, we gained a lot of new information from the updates provided by the faculty and from the Advisory Council members. What was special about this meeting was the milestone reached by CSANR – 15 years of defining and developing a culture of sustainability and advancing research, education and extension/outreach including but not limited to the BIOAg program. Congratulations to Chris Feise for his leadership and to all the faculty and staff who are part of the Center and the broad network it spans.

REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE CONFERENCES
The “Sustainable Agriculture Conferences” RFA has been announced by Western SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) program. Western SARE will be issuing several "short turnaround," targeted requests for applications such as this in the next few months, in addition to their normal Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education and PDP requests for applications. These targeted requests will have relatively short response times compared with normal SARE requests for applications. They are designed to address timely and immediate needs. They also will likely apply to those institutions with the ongoing capacity to perform the requested research and/or educational activities. Normal requests for applications, with longer lead times, will always be posted on the Western SARE website http://wsare.usu.edu on or before April 15th of each year.
