Topics in today’s issue of Extension Update:

4-H Publications Satellite Broadcast
Beginning October 1st, major changes will be forthcoming in how our 4-H Publications will be distributed. Upon successful completion of the enrollment process, the 4-H volunteer will receive a CD with the 4-H publications (that WSU owns) on it and how to obtain 4-H materials like CCS (Cooperative Curriculum System) which we cannot put in the CD. For the short term we will have available, through the regular bulletin order process, 4-H publications while those supplies last. During the October 3rd (Eastside) and October 4th (Westside) 4-H Program Management Days details of this new process will be discussed and CD’s distributed.

A satellite videoconference on the 4-H CD Catalog will be Thursday, October 5, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Guests include:

  • Pat BoyEs, Director, WSU Extension 4-H/Youth Development
  • Rob Stout, Assistant Director, Extension Publications Production and Distribution, Information Department
  • Nancy Mordhorst, 4-H Program Coordinator

CAHNRS UPDATE – AUGUST 31
Please be sure to join us for the first CAHNRS UPDATE videostream broadcast of the new school year on August 31, from 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Joining host Scott Fedale will be Dean of CAHNRS, Dan Bernardo, Dean of WSU Extension Linda Fox and John Winder, the Associate Dean of WSU Extension.

Topics being discussed include:

  • The Food and Agriculture and the Biofuels/Bioproducts legislative requests
  • The WSU Extension Integrated Marketing
  • The WSU Capital Campaign
  • The new WORQS accountability and reporting system

There will also be an introduction of new CAHNRS and Extension faculty and staff.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the live broadcast in room T-101 of the Food Science and Human Nutrition Building so they can ask questions about how they can be involved in supporting both the legislative initiatives and the capital campaign effort.

Those attending should plan to be in their seats by 9:20 and are asked to turn off their cell phones when entering the studio.  For those at other WSU locations across the state, this broadcast will be available via videostreaming from the Information Department videostreaming site at http://caheinfo.wsu.edu.

You can watch using either RealPlayer or WindowMedia player.  The stream will not be available until 10 minutes prior to the broadcast.

For questions about this event, contact program host/producer Scott V. Fedale. Phone 509-335-2952.

CSREES PARTNERS NEWS UPDATES
The recent issue of the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) Update is online and contains several items of interest.

Two Journals Seek Papers
Special issues of two professional journals will examine links between sustainable agriculture, community development, and rural quality of life.

Community Development: Journal of the Community Development Society is seeking papers for a special issue on “Connecting Community Development and Sustainable Agriculture: Sustaining Community Innovation.” This theme stems from the Sustainable Community Innovation Grants program, co-sponsored by Southern SARE and the Southern Rural Development Center. Papers may highlight impacts from the program or explore the conceptual framework that guides successful community innovation strategies.

A special issue of Southern Rural Sociology (SRS) is seeking papers on “sustainable agriculture and the quality of life in rural communities.” This special issue of SRS will focus on sustainable agriculture and community and how the two intersect in the South.

The deadline for calls for abstracts for both journals is October 1, 2006.

Small Farms and Beginning Farmers and Ranchers Policy
On August 3, 2006, the USDA's Office of the Chief Economist released a Departmental Regulation (9700-001) called "Small Farms and Beginning Farmers and Ranchers Policy."  This regulation sets forth the policy of the USDA with regard to the importance and role of small farms, ranches, woodlots, and beginning farmers and ranchers to U.S. agriculture and the establishment of strategies, systems, and a Departmental framework for achieving and maintaining the viability of small farms and beginning farmers and ranchers.  This replaces Departmental Regulation (9700-1, dated September 8, 1999) to include "beginning farmers and ranchers." Go to the OCIO to read the regulation.

PERSONNEL
Office and staff changes:

Several office moves at WSU Spokane campus have occurred and have been announced in the weekly “Extension Update.”  Here are additional changes:

As a result of reorganization Linda Loos, former Principal Assistant to Ed Adams and Extension Ag and Natural Resources is now the Principal Assistant to Vickie Parker-Clark, NE District Director. In addition, a portion of her time will be devoted to support Kelsey Gray, Extension Organizational Specialist, Community and Rural Sociology. The new offices for the NE District, Linda Loos, Vickie and Kelsey as well as Brigitta Jozefowski, Principal Assistant for the Policy Consensus Center are in the new Academic Center, Suite 309.

Mary Enquist, former Principal Assistant to the NE District, has moved on a temporary basis to the Area Health Education Center to support Charlotte Hardt, Interim Director. The AHEC offices continue to be in the Health Sciences building on the Spokane Campus.

WSU Extension WRICOPS (Western Regional Institute for Community Oriented Public Safety) is now located on the 4th floor and Megan Riebe, WSU Extension and CAHNRS Interim Director of Development, is located on the 5th floor of the Academic Center.

It appears we all need to visit the WSU Spokane campus and see the new office locations of our Extension colleagues!
