Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:
Horizons Program: Community Leadership
to Reduce Povert
Your help and interest is needed! When it comes to creating
a thriving community, it’s the community members themselves
who are the key to success.
The Horizons program is about the changes a community can make
to move from poverty to hope, from population and economic decline
to prosperity. This initiative is for rural communities of fewer
than 5,000 and with poverty rates of at least 10 percent.
Open to all community members, Horizons focuses on practical strategies
and tools. More specifically, it provides locally-delivered training,
skill-building, and coaching to strengthen community leadership
and civic engagement systems. Experience has shown that small communities
can thrive if they have a strong leadership system.
Washington State University Extension is the delivery organization
for Horizons in Washington. Washington communities that engage in
the program will be actively involved in five phases over the course
of two years:
- Spotlight—a one-day experience that gives a broad overview
of the program (to be held this Fall)
- Study Circles—groups of 8-12 use a facilitated process
to discuss poverty and develop a plan for action
- Leadership Plenty— 9-10 sessions during which groups of
up to 25 community members participate in intensive training
- Community visioning—community members come together to
create and adopt a shared vision for poverty reduction
- Community focused trainings, coaching, and educational programs
as identified in their shared vision
The Horizon’s program is funded by the Northwest Area Foundation

Explorer 7 is released later this year. Now is the time to learn
and prepare!
To attend this online training, you must have a high-speed Internet
connection, and Flash Player must be installed in your browser.
To confirm that your computer will be able to receive the training,

You will also need a telephone with a mute button. Speaker phone
or head set preferable, for your comfort.
Enroll at http://caheinfo.wsu.edu/webtips/rss-enroll.html
