WESTERN EXTENSION DIRECTORS' AWARD
OF EXCELLENCE
WSU Extension submitted two nominations for the second
annual Western Extension Director’s Awards of Excellence;
Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People Program and Urban IPM and
Pesticide Safety Education. The Germ City program has won the 2007
Western Extension Director’s Award of Excellence for a Multi-State
Program.
Congratulations to the Germ City team:
- B. Susie Craig, Program Director/Co-PI, Washington State University
Extension
- Guendoline Brown, Co-PI, West Virginia University Extension
- Sandra McCurdy, University of Idaho Extension Services
- Lynn Nakamura-Tengan, University of Hawaii Extension Services
- Donnie L. Cook, Alabama A & M University Extension
- Allison Nichols, West Virginia University Extension
- Sharon Hoelscher Day, University of Arizona (special recognition)
The Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People Program is a unique,
interactive
Extension, education, and research program addressing hand hygiene,
food safety, and health leading to improved hand washing behaviors.
The focal point of the program is a large, accessible lightproof
tunnel equipped with black lights. Participants traverse the tunnel
seeing a germ simulation on their hands. After washing, participants
revisit assessing effectiveness and interacting with Extension educators
in a variety of community settings. Education curricula and evaluation
programs have been developed for fairs and festivals as well as
classroom lessons for K – 8. The objectives of the Germ City
Program are to enhance awareness of the importance of hand washing
using science-based education, improve effectiveness and frequency
of hand washing, facilitate cognitive-behavioral change, and generate
a data/research base for future study and evaluation of hand washing
education programs. Our program has reached more than 400,000 participants
since 1998.
The Washington team for the Germ City program will receive the
award at the summer meeting of the Western Extension Directors in
July in California. Along with the award, Germ City will receive
$1,000 to use toward program enhancement or professional development.
The Washington team for Urban IPM and Pesticide Safety Education
Program will receive $500. That team is:
- Carol Ramsay, Pesticide Education Specialist, Pullman, WA
- Carrie Foss, Urban IPM Coordinator, Puyallup, WA
- Becky Hines, Pesticide Safety Associate, Puyallup, WA

DIVERSITY HIGHLIGHT
The Extension Diversity Catalyst Team shares another example
of successful outreach to diverse audiences in this week's Update.
Diana Castro and Ann Diede are county-based educators on the cutting
edge of adapting the Strengthening Families Program (SFP) to reach
Latino families. Diana is an educator in Mason County who did extensive
work adapting a Spanish language version of the SFP curriculum to
be culturally appropriate for Latino youth and families. She is
a nationally certified trainer for this version of SFP, and has
trained facilitators across Washington State. Ann has partnered
with local agencies to offer the Spanish version of SFP in Chelan/Douglas
counties. Even though she does not speak Spanish, Ann has been successful
in recruiting and supporting bilingual program facilitators-- a
testimony to the fact that one can be successful in outreach to
Latino audiences without Spanish fluency. Both Diana and Ann have
great experience in adapting recruitment strategies, materials and
delivery methods to be effective with Latino youth and families.
They were recently part of a WSU Extension team that presented a
workshop on Spanish language SFP at the National Children-Youth-Families-At
Risk (CYFAR) Conference. To access more information about the Strengthening
Families Program, check http://parenting.wsu.edu.

It is hurricane season in New Orleans once again! A year flows by
quickly. Several times over the last year, I have asked our staff
development editor, Vallerie Maurice, who lived and worked in the
Southern Louisiana area, to write about her experience of living
near the area of the hurricane Katrina devastation. She always agreed
to write about what was happening with her family and in her community
– but, when deadline came, she had no words for me. She finally
admitted that the experience was too raw, too emotional. She couldn’t
write about her experience. She was consumed with caring for her
family – her mother, sister, niece, and nephew. They lost
all of their possessions to Katrina and moved into Vallerie’s
apartment in Baton Rouge.
One year later, Vallerie is able to put words to her experience.
This is one Extension Diversity professional’s story of her
experience with Katrina and how it has changed her life and the
lives of those around her. Thank you, Vallerie, for sharing this
with us so that we can deepen our understanding and our empathy
for those who were affected by Katrina. Source: Ann Schauber, Center
