Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

eCOMMERCE TRAINING COMING UP FOR EXTENSION PROFESSIONALS
The Western Rural Development Center (WRDC) is producing this program with the assistance of Utah State Extension. The training was developed because of demand by Extension Professionals in the West. The “eCommerce – Western Style” conference will be held in Salt Lake City on June 7-8.

The three learning segments, Planning for eCommerce, eCommerce Technology, and Online Marketing Strategies will give Extension Professionals a solid overview of how and why e-commerce works and how to assist their clients in implementing it. By the way, participants are not expected to become web designers. Extension leaders throughout the West will receive invaluable training to carry back to their clients.

For all the details and registration information, go to http://extension.usu.edu/wrdc/ecommerce2006.cfm

Registration is $150; deadline is May 26.

Rural Sociological Society Releases Research Brief
The Rural Sociological Society (RSS) published a new research brief, the “Changing Face of Rural America.” This is the first of six research briefs RSS will publish to support the research findings reported in Challenges for Rural America in the Twenty-First Century, http://www.ruralsociology.org/pubs/RuralStudies/index.html edited by David Brown and Louis Swanson. That volume is part of Penn State University’s Rural Studies Series and is sponsored by the RSS. This first research brief http://www.ruralsociology.org/ is found on the RSS Web site. Subsequent briefs will highlight the challenges of rural poverty; tourism and amenity-based development in rural communities; competition, cooperation, and local government; improving rural educations achievement; and catalytic community development. TELEWORK AGREEMENTS - SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
An approved telework agreement allows a staff member to regularly work from home or an alternative work site, utilizing telecommunications and computer technology. Washington State University recognizes telework as a work option that may meet a variety of needs, including, but not limited to: enhancing employee productivity and satisfaction, reducing commute trips, and addressing space restrictions. Such an arrangement requires special consideration regarding purchases, inventory control, records management, safety and ergonomics and more. If you supervise an employee who has a telework arrangement be sure that you are aware of WSU Policies and Procedures regarding Telework Agreements (BPPM 60.34).
