DIVERSITY PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT
WSU King County Extension programming is making a positive
difference at White Center Heights Intermediate School. White Center
Heights is one of seven schools that benefited from fresh fruit
drop-offs during WASL testing weeks as part of the WSU Food Sense
program coordinated by Beth Blessing. In addition to the fresh fruit
drop off, the school also is growing a vegetable garden and using
the harvest to make salads and other fresh meals.
According to the school Principal, Greta Salmi, this year students
are more focused and less anxious and that may well help them do
better on the WASL. White Center Heights is a school with children
from 29 different countries and over 80% of the children live in
home where English is not the first language. While this represents
special challenges for Extension programming, it also brings unique
opportunities. Children and their parents are brining in family
recipes to share with their classmates and the WSU Extension staff
which creates a rich cultural and health focused learning environment.

Well: Fruit snacks score high during WASL”
