Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

LEAD21 PARTICIPANT FROM WSU EXTENSION
Extension is sponsoring one individual who will begin the two-year LEAD21 program. Congratulations to Christy Price, Grant County Extension! LEAD21 is the new program replacing NELD (National Extension Leadership Development program) and the similar leadership programs of the experiment station and academic programs, all rolled into one called Leadership Development for the 21st Century: Linking Research, Academics, and Extension.

MAY EDITION OF THE DIVERSITY CENTER
Immigration is the lead story in the news these days. Our attention nationally is focused on what the U.S. government will do with undocumented Mexican immigrants who are living and working in the United States. The issue is complex. Thanks to the coordinating efforts of Dionardo Pizaña, at Michigan State and Eduardo González, Jr., at Cornell, the May edition of the Diversity Center http://www.ediversitycenter.net/ provides educational information to shed light on this complex issue. The front page includes articles on:

  • Hispanic/Latino farmers as the fastest growing minority farmer group who are not always counted in the Agricultural Census
  • Who the Migrant Farm workers are
  • A Migrant Farm worker curriculum you can use
  • American Farm Bureau’s report on impact of migrant labor restrictions

You will also find

  • May Holibrations
  • The Application for the National Extension Diversity Award
  • Upcoming professional development conferences under what’s new
  • Looking for a new job? See job postings on the Hiring Diversity page. Also, do you want to recruit a diverse workforce? Professional Organizations connected to agriculture and underrepresented groups as a place to advertise are listed on our Hiring Diveresity page.
  • The Change Agent States for Diversity’s Tools for Changing your organization to become more inclusive on the Organizational Change page
  • A new study on retention of minority faculty at California Universities under what’s new on the front page.

eXtension UPDATES
‘Wikis Work!’ Session May 24, 2006

Kris Olsen, blogger and wiki expert, will present “Wikis Work!” on May 24 at noon ET as part of a new eXtension professional development series. The program will be available through your web browser at http://breeze.extension.iastate.edu/learn.

In this session, Olsen, who blogs about wikis and group activities at WikiThat.com, will show how to make wikis work for almost any collaborative project. Wikis, collections of web pages that can be created and updated directly by group members, have long been used by web and software developers to stay on track with group projects…Click here for the rest of the story.

Monthly Web Conferences Schedule For All Cop Members

As a CoP members you can now participate in a monthly Web conferences that is hosted by the Content team for eXtension. These Web conferences will be informal and you can join when your schedule permits. These are not required conferences but just a mechanism to share information, provide a discussion forum, answer questions, provide training (like maybe the Wiki tip of the month!), share products being developed by CoPs, etc. Click here for the rest of the story.
