Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

UPDATE: POSITIONING WSU EXTENSION FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Our work to best position and market WSU Extension for the 21st Century gained some exciting momentum this past week. Members of the Extension Administrative Team and I had a very positive, day-long retreat with President Rawlins, Provost Bates, other central administrators and our consultants from Educational Marketing Group Wednesday.

The business at hand was to review the wonderful input that Extension faculty, staff and volunteers as well as non-Extension faculty have provided over the past several months and the key messages that surfaced. The retreat format allowed time for a much deeper conversation about the role and place of Extension within Washington State University and across the state. We came away with a strong affirmation of the importance of Extension to the institution and to Washington.

Next steps include further refinement of possible message points and delivery of final recommendations from EMG. Those recommendations will spark a new round of discussion within the Extension Administrative Team about how best to proceed.

I want to thank everyone who has participated in this process to date, including those of you who responded to the e-mail survey sent out by Provost Bates (418 people responded!), those who participated in person in the focus groups and meetings on both sides of the state, and to members of the A-Team, who have played an integral role in this process.

EXTENSION ENGAGED: “ANIMAL HANDLING SAFETY”
Join us on Thursday, May 18 at 9:30-10:30 a.m for the Extension Engaged on Animal Handling Safety. We all know petting zoos, agricultural fairs, and farm tours provide wonderful opportunities for the public to learn about animals and agriculture. However, lack of understanding of disease transmission can lead to illness among visitors, especially children, when visitors are exposed to animal exhibit settings. In 1999 and 2000 over 25 human disease outbreaks were associated with visitors to animal exhibits. Although eliminating all risk from animal contact might not be achievable, this broadcast provides standardized recommendations for minimizing disease risks.

In this program, viewers will be introduced to the reality of disease outbreak risks associated with animal exhibits, the pathogens of greatest concern and recent research about hand washing and observation of fair goers and will be provided a toolkit for organizing public animal exhibits.

Guests include:

  • Zena Edwards, Food Safety & Nutrition Faculty for WSU Thurston County Extension
  • Margaret Davis, Washington State University, Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology
  • Jerry Newman, 4-H Youth Specialist
  • Pat BoyEs, WSU 4-H Youth Development Program Director

This program is being broadcast nationwide via satellite and videostream. Those attending in person should plan to be in their seats by 9:20 and are asked to turn off their cell phones when entering the studio.

For those located outside of Pullman, this broadcast will be will be available via videostreaming from the Information Department videostreaming site at: "http://caheinfo.wsu.edu." You can watch using either RealPlayer or WindowMedia player. The stream will not be available until 10 minutes prior to the broadcast. For those viewing by satellite, the tuning information is as follows:

Notice to Travelers – Travel Advances
Travelers who receive a travel advance for meals and lodging expenses are required to submit a Travel Expense Voucher to account for expenditure of the travel advance. This TEV must be received at the WSU Controller’s Office by the 10th day of the month following the month of travel. For example, on a trip ending April 25th, a TEV accounting for the travel advance would be due at the controller’s office by May 10th.

Since all TEVs are reviewed by Kasey Schertenleib at the Business and Finance Office before being forwarded to the WSU Controller’s Office, we are requesting that TEVs for travel advances be received at the Business and Finance Office at least 5 business days before the Controller’s Office deadline.

Travel advances are a point of emphasis with state auditors, and it is important to follow WSU policy to ensure compliance. Your efforts to submit travel advance TEVs in a timely manner are appreciated.

If you have any questions regarding travel advances or any other travel related questions, please contact Kasey Schertenleib at kasey@wsu.edu or 509-335-2827.

NOTICE OF SUMMER HOURS
With the academic year drawing to a close, it is time for managers to make plans for summer schedules. Washington State University's business hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. year round. WSU is committed to providing its full range of services during the normal business hours established for state offices, including the noon hour.

At the same time, in keeping with a long-standing practice, WSU will observe a schedule known as summer hours for as many employees as possible, while still meeting the requirement to serve the public from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Summer hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with 30 minutes for lunch, during the period from Monday, May 8, 2006, through Friday, August 11, 2006.

Departments are encouraged to provide summer hours for as many employees as possible. It is the responsibility of the supervisors and staff of each area to provide service to the public during the noon hour and from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. during this period. Human Resource Services encourages managers to be fair and equitable in making those arrangements.

Administrators at units not located in Pullman are encouraged to establish summer schedules which provide services to the public during normal business hours, and still provide as much flexibility as possible for employees.

The Office of the Dean and Director and the Business Finance Office will both have someone available from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, however staff members will take turns taking advantage of the summer hours and vacations.

SCHEDULE
Linda and John will be in the office on Monday and attending a variety of meetings in Puyallup, and Mount Vernon Tuesday through Thursday. Linda will be on annual leave Friday and John will be in the office. Sherri will be on military duty in Stavanger, Norway April 24 – May 11.
