PLANT MANAGEMENT NETWORK
With support from the Department of Plant Pathology and WSU Extension, we are a partner institution of the Plant Management Network (http://www.plantmanagementnetwork.org/), which is a website devoted to plant health issues. Included are four electronic journals, Plant Health Progress, Applied Turfgrass Science, Crop Management, and Forage and Grazing Lands, dedicated to providing science-based information to plant health practitioners. In addition, there are several other electronic resources available including Fungicide and Nematicide Tests, Biological and Cultural Tests for Control of Plant Diseases, Arthropod Management Tests, Variety Trials, and searchable image and plant science databases (publications from partner organizations such as extension bulletins, fact sheets, and etc.)

As a WSU CAHNRS or Extension employee or adjunct you have access to this website, as long as you access the site from a computer on the University network. In addition, all current faculty, students, and staff, including statewide extension agents, may sign-up for a free personal subscription as part of the WSU member privilege. Advantages of a personal subscription include a monthly newsletter that provides article alerts and other news developments (e.g., http://www.plantmanagementnetwork.org/update/archive/01-06.htm).

I encourage you to visit the Plant Management Network website and take advantage of this resource and to consider a personal subscription (http://www.plantmanagementnetwork.org/subscriptions/activation/default.cfm?ID=100014). Your personal subscription and use of the website will also help us to decide whether to continue supporting this resource.

MARCH EDENbriefs AVAILABLE ON-LINE
EDENbriefs is published three times a year in March, July and November as the newsletter of the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN). EDEN is a consortium of Extension professionals from 49 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam who focus on disaster-related issues. In the event of a disaster, the full resources of the network are available to affected areas for publications, advice, and coordination. EDEN’s home website is: http://www.eden.lsu.edu/. EDEN’s goal is to inform local Extension agents/educators about the national network that is available to them in times of disaster, specific programs that may serve as models, and resources that may be useful in disaster planning or response. The March edition of EDENbriefs is available on-line at http://www.eden.lsu.edu/newsletter/edenb-06-03.html.

FACULTY SHARE RESEARCH WITH KEY LEGISLATORS
On February 28, thanks in large part to the efforts of Michael Salvador, the WSU faculty liaison to the state legislature, WSU faculty from around the state had an opportunity to share their research with key legislators, staff and the entire House Higher Education Committee. Salvador currently chairs the group of liaisons from the state's public four year schools and through his energy, this pilot effort enabled the college and university faculty to meet face to face with key decision makers so that the impact of their research could be well understood. Faculty from WSU Pullman, WSU Vancouver and WSU Puyallup all were able to discuss their projects in terms of economic development, environmental preservation, and support for the state's K-12 system. Special thanks to Mike Gaffney (Division of Governmental Studies and Services, Pullman), Dave Muehleisen and Andy Bary (WSU Puyallup) and Cliff Moore (WSU Extension Thurston County) who took the time to participate in this event. It was so successful that plans are already underway to repeat it this year for other key decision makers and to expand it for next year's legislative session.

URBAN MEETS RURAL: WIRED FOR BUSINESS SUCESS
The Center to Bridge the Digital Divide breakfast event Urban Meets Rural: Wired for Business Success was well attended by 90 on February 23 in Seattle. It was a tremendous success - from opening remarks by Senator Murray and WSU Provost Bates to presentations from Kathy White, Rural Sourcing, and executives from five Washington companies about rural business solutions (branch offices, outsourcing, business relocation entrepreneurial start ups and telework). As a follow up, two online resources are now available:

TVW taped the complete program and it is available on the web at: http://www.tvw.org/MediaPlayer/Archived/WME.cfm?EVNum=2006020205&TYPE=V

Mike Flynn, who served as panel moderator during the breakfast, wrote an editorial, A Viable Alternative to Offshoring, and posted it on the web at: http://seattle.bizjournals.com/seattle/stories/2006/03/06/editorial3.html

We hope this is the first of many discussions about how rural and urban can find work together to be wired for business success. Please contact us with your questions or to explore options. For more information contact Dee Christensen at christensend@wsu.edu or 360-584-3025 or Monica Babine at babinem@wsu.edu or 425-827-8015.
