Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:
BIG PASSENGER VANS ELIMINATED, DRIVER
REQUIREMENTS CHANGE
Washington State University is phasing out all its 12-
and 15-passenger vans and replacing them with 7- or 8-passenger
vans. And, based on national and state recommendations, van drivers
will need five years driving experience, rather than two. For other
van policy changes, click on the following url link to WSU Today
online at www.wsutoday.wsu.edu
for the full story http://www.wsutoday.wsu.edu/completestory.asp?StoryID=2621
or check out the Safety Policies and Procedures Manual (SPPM) for
these revisions. Documents outlining the changes and timeline for
implementation are posted on the Extension Policies and Procedures
web site http://ext.wsu.edu/admin/
under Program Management.
To access the latest revisions to the SPPM, point your web browser

the above web page. The memorandum includes direct links to the

FOREIGN LIABILITY INSURANCE FOR
BUSINESS RELATED TRAVEL
All WSU employees, spouses and dependents and volunteers
are provided with foreign liability insurance for business related
travel outside the continental U.S. The insurance provides a wide
array of emergency services. It includes, but is not limited to,
24-hour access to physicians for emergency and routine medical advice,
referral and assistance, emergency medical evacuation, and much
more. After receiving prior approval for international travel, contact
Rick Fadness at 509-335-6893 and he will provide you with a WSU
corporate membership card and informational brochure.

PNW ENERGY EXTENSION INITIATIVE
PILOT PROJECT
County Extension staff members are strongly encouraged
to participate in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Energy Extension Initiative
Pilot Project by taking advantage of the services that the Energy
Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Information Center provides.
The EERE Information Center is managed and operated by the WSU Extension
Energy Program, and marketing material is now available at http://www.energy.wsu.edu/projects/assistance/PacificNorthwestInitiative.cfm
for county Extension staff to market this service to local government
leaders.
This pilot project focuses on the growing need for credible, unbiased
energy information to help local government officials make sound
energy decisions, and it taps into the strong working relationships
that county Extension staff already have with local government leaders.
In addition, the December 16, 2005 Extension Engaged http://caheinfo.wsu.edu/video/stream.html
program is about the Energy Program, and available as a resource.
For more information and to access marketing material on the PNW
Energy Extension Initiative, visit http://www.energy.wsu.edu/projects/assistance/.
RECRUITING NACO EXTENSION FELLOW
The National Association of Counties (NACo), in partnership
with the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension
Service (CSREES) and the National Association of State Universities
and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), is offering the Ralph L. Tabor
Extension Fellowship 2006-2007 for Extension faculty and staff.
Applications are due March 10, 2006 in the office of the WSU Extension
Dean and Director, to be pre-screened and meet the March 31 deadline.
The Fellow is for a one-year term in Washington, D.C., that begins
approximately August 1, 2006.
The Ralph L. Tabor Extension Fellowship offers the opportunity
to live and work in Washington, D.C., to lend expertise to the nation’s
3,066 counties, learn first-hand about the workings of Congress
and federal agencies, and take a lead role in enhancing the national
partnership between NACo, CSREES and the nation’s land-grant
universities. It provides a professional development opportunity
to work at a national legislative and public affairs, research,
and technical services organization – NACo. The Extension
Fellow also works closely with CSREES to gain insight into Extension’s
federal partner and with NASULGC to enhance the relationship between
counties and higher education.
Because the home state institution or organization must continue
the individual’s salary and fringe benefits during the term
of service, interested individuals must apply to their State Director
of Extension for consideration for the Ralph L. Tabor Extension
Fellowship. Only applications approved by State Directors will be
accepted. The application must include a cover letter, the applicant's
resume, and one or two letters of recommendation, including a letter
from the State Director. Applications can be sent to extensionfellow@naco.org
or Ralph L. Tabor Extension Fellowship, National Association of
Counties, 440 First Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20001.
Please contact the most recent Extension Fellow, Sherry Teachout
Glenn, Ed.D., at sglenn@iastate.edu
for more information.
