Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

POSITIONING EXTENSION: WATCH FOR EMAIL FROM PROVOST BATES
Next week you can expect to receive an email from Provost Bates requesting your participation in an on-line questionnaire created by Educational Marketing Group (EMG) who we have been working with the past few months on “Positioning WSU Extension for the 21st Century” which is taking a comprehensive look at how best to position and market the services of WSU Extension among the Washington State University community as well as Extension clients, stakeholders and funding sources. Educational Marketing Group (EMG), the same firm that helped Washington State University to develop its marketing initiative five years ago, will lead the initiative.

As I stated in the September 23rd Extension Update http://ext.wsu.edu/Update/2005/0923.html, “Positioning Extension” is a meaty, complex project that involves the participation of a broad spectrum of people from the state – those working in Extension, those whom Extension currently serves and those who could benefit from Extension services in the future. The success of this initiative is important not only for Extension, but for WSU as well. It is a way to highlight and embrace the land-grant mission of WSU and explore the full potential of university-wide Extension. It also will provide the foundation for a communications plan that markets to one of the university’s unique strengths.

The overarching goals of the Positioning WSU Extension initiative are two-fold. Our outcome must be aligned with the strategic plan and integrated marketing efforts of Washington State University. At the same time, it must be nested in and supportive of Extension’s critical partnerships with federal and county governments.

Logistically, the Positioning WSU Extension initiative has already included input from a variety of documents and data, listening sessions held in December and January, and personal interviews and focus groups with university and Extension leadership. The online input form is an additional opportunity for all Extension faculty and staff and volunteers to be involved. The objective is to have in place a communications plan based on EMG’s insight and recommendations ready for implementation in late summer 2006.

I hope you will take the time to complete this important questionnaire when it is announced next week. There will be a small window of time to participate so please plan to do it ASAP.

NOTICE TO TRAVELERS – HOLIDAY INN, PULLMAN
There have been recent problems with travelers to WSU-Pullman obtaining the government per diem rate of $60 at the Holiday Inn. We have been informed that the Holiday Inn will grant the $60 government rate to travelers who present a valid WSU employee identification card. Be advised that this policy is at the discretion of Holiday Inn, Pullman and is subject to change based on occupancy rates and special events.

The lodging exception rule #2 does not apply to instances where $60 rates are available at other motels in Pullman. Other than special event weekends (sporting events, graduation, etc.), lodging is normally available in Pullman for $60 at several motels. If a traveler exceeds the lodging per diem rate without claiming a valid lodging exception rule, they are only eligible to be reimbursed for the per diem rate plus taxes.

If you have any questions about this, please contact Kasey Schertenleib at 509-335-2827 or kasey@wsu.edu .

SEAGO NAMED NEW LIAISON TO EPA REGION 10
As of January 30th Jan Seago is our new land grant institution (LGI) liaison to the EPA Region 10 office in Seattle, Washington. The goal of the liaison position is to increase the visibility of water resource research, outreach, and education programs conducted by the land grant institutions in the Pacific Northwest by developing cooperative programs with EPA Region 10. This liaison position supports water resource programs in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington and is jointly administered by the five associated land grant institutions (Northwest Indian College, Oregon State University, University of Alaska, University of Idaho, Washington State University). The goal of the liaison position is to strengthen collaboration between LGIs, state Water Research Institutes, and the Environmental Protection Agency Region10.

The water resource programs of the EPA and LGIs are complementary rather than competitive. Karl Arne describes the partnership between the outreach component of land grant institutions and EPA Region 10 as “aligning two organizations so they work well together.” Arne, EPA’s regional agriculture sector team leader, is EPA’s liaison to the LGI’s regional water program. “Extension’s expertise meshes with ours – but it is different,” he says.

Ms. Seago is the fourth person to fill the liaison position which has been in existence since 1989. Jan replaces Sharon Collman who served in this capacity for the past two years. Sharon has taken a job with her first love – urban integrated pest management (IPM) with WSU Extension in Snohomish County. Contact her at seago.jan@epa.gov.

PERSONNEL
New Collaborative Extension and WTRC Partnership

Millions of dollars are spent each year in the Washington tree fruit industry to improve fruit disorder problems. A new collaborative research effort has been initiated on behalf of the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission (WTFRC) and WSU Extension.

Dr. Ines Müller, a WSU 2005 Ph.D. horticulture graduate, has been hired by the WTFRC to work in partnership with WSU Extension Educator, Dr. Dana Faubion, to identify and better manage fruit disorders. Faubion has been recognized for his innovative research and knowledge transfer of 1-methylcyclopropene (MCP) on fruit firmness during storage. The product is now labeled Smart Fresh. Faubion and Müller will work together in the engagement of industry professionals to improve fruit quality. Müller will be based out of the Yakima County WSU Extension office. She will work under the supervision of Dr.Jim McFerson, manager of the Research Commission, to add a stronger Commission presence in the Yakima Valley to benefit growers and handlers throughout Washington and researchers nationwide.

The Research Commission provides funding to federal, university and state institutions, focusing on high priority harvest and post-harvest problems; Lenticel breakdown disorder, sunburn, flecking, scald, Gala splitting and cherry rain-cracking are examples of funding priorities. Müller will coordinate these projects to expedite transfer of research results to industry implementation.

SCHEDULE
Linda will be in Pullman Monday and in Albuquerque, New Mexico the rest of the week attending the National Extension Directors meeting. On Saturday and Sunday Linda will be at Auburn University attending the Summit on Global Hunger. Ed will in Spokane Monday, Tuesday and Friday. On Wednesday and Thursday he will be in Puyallup attending WSU Research & Extension Westside Agriculture and Natural Resource Days.
