Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

APRIL 1 START DATE FOR NEW ASSOCIATE DEAN AND ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF EXTENSION
We are pleased to announce Dr. John Winder has been hired as Associate Dean and Associate Director of WSU Extension. He will start on April 1, 2006.  Dr. Winder currently serves as Assistant Director of Extension at Oregon State University. Dr. Winder comes to WSU very well prepared for the job. He has devoted considerable energy toward broadening the engagement of Oregon State University with communities across the state. In addition, he has supported the national Extension agenda by serving on the eXtension review panel charged with evaluating proposals for “community of practice” grants. He serves on the Western Regional Coordination and Implementation Committee (RCIC), the committee which approves and advises multi-state and integrated Research and Extension projects. During his career he has also worked for the University of Vermont Extension, the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, New Mexico State University, and Oklahoma State University.  He has a Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from Colorado State University.

TRAINING REQUIRED FOR ALL NEW SPONSORED PROGRAM AWARDS
The National Science Foundation has notified WSU that we must train faculty in several key areas (see Extension Update, September 30, 2005). To facilitate this process, while minimizing the burden on our faculty, Jim Petersen, Vice Provost for Research, has developed an on-line training program. Although we encourage all faculty and graduate students to complete the training, at the present time, we will require participation only by those who receive new sponsored program awards. Thus, starting immediately, OGRD and Sponsored Programs will not be able to complete account setup processes until all a project’s co-PI’s have completed the necessary training. To access the training modules, faculty should sign in to https://myresearch.wsu.edu using their usual WSU network ID and password.

NEW USDA CSREES UNDER SECRETARY NOMINEE
President George W. Bush recently announced his intention to nominate Gale A. Buchanan as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education and Economics. Earlier in his career, he served as associate director for the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and resident director of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station. Buchanan served as a colonel in the Alabama Army National Guard for over 25 years. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL; and received his PhD from Iowa State University, Ames, IA.

NATIONAL RESEARCH INITIATIVE “PARTNERS” VIDEO MAGAZINE #14
The new Cooperative States Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) “Partners” Video Magazine takes a look at the National Research Initiative (NRI) in its quest to tackle the pressing scientific issues of our time. Partners Video Magazine is produced by CSREES and highlights programs and accomplishments of agricultural research, education, and extension systems nationwide.

The four segments on this release focus on:

  • Wonders of Wheat -- In California, University of California-Davis scientists are unlocking the secrets of wheat by mapping its complex genomes. It is vital information that will benefit farmers and consumers alike.
  • Wild Medicine -- In Mississippi, researchers are exploring the medicinal wonders of the Mayapple, a wild plant that produces critical chemicals used in today’s anticancer drugs.
  • Beating Obesity -- In Hawaii, the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center combines fresh, locally-grown food with weight management intervention to help residents fight against obesity.
  • The Great Pollinators -- In Illinois, scientists are learning how bees communicate with each other in hopes of saving these important pollinators of the plant world.
  • A DVD of the NRI Partners Video Magazine was sent to all Land-Grant Partners and should arrive soon.
