Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:
CHECK YOUR EARNINGS STATEMENT
The new 2006 medical rates and optional benefit programs,
such as Flex Spending and Dependant Care Assistance Program are
reflected on your January 10, 2006 earnings statement. If you signed
up for a certain benefit during Open Enrollment and you do not see
the premium on your earnings statement or there is an error on your
statement, please contact Benefit Services at 509-335-4589 or email
benefits@wsu.edu.
AICS EXTENSION PROJECT AND
PROGRAM BRIEFING REPORTS
Please note that when there are team members listed on
AICS Extension Projects and Programs, ANY of the members can change
the briefing report. The changes will appear on everyone’s
copy of that project briefing report. We have had incidents of one
member replacing the entire report with information specific to
his or her program efforts. If you want to include information specific
to your program contributions for Team POAs, you should put your
efforts under the individual comments and contribution section of
the POA. Comments in the individual comments and contributions are
not viewable by other members of the Team POA and are available
only to administrators.
CAHNRS AND EXTENSION ONLINE
DIRECTORY
Please go to the CAHNRS Extension Directory and make sure
your information is correct. You can update your own listing. For
additions, deletions and changes for other employees, please send
an email to your district or department administrative assistant
with the appropriate information and they can make those changes.

“SHOWCASE”
CELEBRATIONS BUILD ON EXCELLENCE
Washington State University once again will accent accomplishment
and reward excellence during the 3rd Annual “World Class.
Face to Face.” Showcase events, set for Friday, March 24,
2006 on the Pullman campus. Last year’s participation by faculty,
staff and students in the scholarly and creative Academic Showcase
exhibit session was overwhelming, organizers agree. That event will
move to Bohler Gym this year so posters and other presentations
may be displayed all in one place. Presenters come from all the
WSU campuses and WSU Extension, so the event is truly a celebration
of excellence for the entire WSU system. In addition, it is an opportunity
to interact with and appreciate our colleagues from outside our
own colleges. The banquet honors recipients of WSU’s top faculty
and staff awards, as well as newly tenured and promoted faculty.
Important dates to note:
Monday, January 16, through Friday, February 24:
Dates for acceptance of abstracts for the Academic Showcase. Online
abstract submission will be available at the www.showcase.wsu.edu
website.
Friday, February 10:
Reservations for the day’s two other highlights — the
Celebrating Excellence Recognition Banquet and the all-university
luncheon featuring a presentation by the Distinguished Faculty Address
awardee — may be made at the same website beginning February
10.
2006 WSU R&E WESTSIDE AGRICULTURE
AND NATURAL RESOURCE DAYS
The online registration is now available for the Westside ANR Research
and Extension Days on February 15 and 16 at WSU Puyallup. Please
go to http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/nwd/anrdays/index.html
to register and for program details.
The program allows time for networking with colleagues; learning
about what is new in research and extension in Western Washington;
developing project and grant proposals; starting the development
of a Puget Sound Initiative; and learning about 'Hot Topics', such
as Sudden Oak Death and Bird Flu. Program highlights include a presentation
by Dr. Amy Snover, Researcher from the UW Climate Change Group,
on climate change, and by Chad Kruger, outreach coordinator for
the WSU Climate Friendly Farming Team, on current WSU research in
this area. The agenda will be updated with more details during the
month.
The program has been developed by a planning committee facilitated
by the WSU-King County Extension Water, Land, Forests, Farms and
Foods Team in collaboration with committee members from the Southwest
District and WSU-Puyallup. The entire team is recognized on the
website. Actual conference costs are being supported by the Extension
districts and WSU-Puyallup.
Northwest District and the Southwest District will provide travel
and lodging support to their respective personnel, regardless of
whether they are WSU employees or county employees. Please submit
a TA to your district office. All other attendees will need to provide
their own support. It is appreciated if attendees carpool and share
rooms whenever possible.

WSU EXTENSION FACULTY CONTRIBUTE
TO JOURNAL OF EXTENSION
Following are summaries of two articles in the December
issue of the Journal of Extension (www.joe.org)
which WSU Extension faculty contributed to:
Drinking Water Issues in the Pacific Northwest (http://www.joe.org/joe/2005december/rb6.shtml)
[Article No. 6RIB6]
Mahler, Robert L.; Simmons, Robert; Sorensen, Fred
This article contains drinking water information from a region-wide
survey designed to collect base line data about water issues in
the Pacific Northwest. The major findings were: (1) over 90% of
survey respondents feel that their home drinking water is safe for
consumption, (2) minerals were the most often cited pollutants in
drinking water supplies, (3) approximately 25% of residents have
installed filters on their sink faucets to improve water quality,
and (4) over 25% of residents use bottled water for drinking purposes.
These survey results will be used to develop relevant drinking water
educational programs for citizens of the Pacific Northwest.
The Pesticide Notification Network: An E-Source for Agriculture
(http://www.joe.org/joe/2005december/iw1.shtml)
[Article No. 6IAW1]
Thomas, Jane M.; Daniels, Catherine
The Pesticide Notification Network (PNN) is WSU's unique way of
distributing information about changes in pesticide registration
to the agricultural community. The PNN uses a Web-based computer
program to build a targeted distribution list for each notification
and then distributes the notifications via e-mail. PNN users tailor
their subscriptions by both crop and pesticide type. Using the PNN's
capabilities, a tree fruit entomologist can elect to only receive
notifications about insecticides for use on tree fruit, while the
Washington Hop Commission receives every hop-related PNN notification.
Using programming capabilities the PNN distributes the right information
to the right people.
