Topics in today's issue of Extension Update:

PLEASE SUBMIT IMPACT STATEMENTS
Impact statements are brief reports written in lay language that explain the economic, environmental or social impact of your work. They raise the visibility of your accomplishments and illustrate your accountability to taxpayers, elected officials at every level, external sources of funding and many other interested people, including reporters looking for research.

They have been collected nationally for more than a decade and submitted in early January to the federal “Science & Education Impact” Web site where land-grant universities across the nation deposit more than 3,500 impact statements each year.

Some of the statements are collected for the “Best pf the West Western Regional Impacts” posted on the Web.

Our impact statements are posted on the “Washington State Impacts” Web site. The site was launched in 2002 to serve as a resource for lawmakers at every level in Washington state.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit Impact Statements using the Web interface which enables you to draft a submission which is sent to the Information Department. Dennis Brown will edit each, clear changes with you, and post to the Web. The Web interface at: http://ext.wsu.edu/impact/  has been created to help you craft and submit your statement. If you have further questions, please contact Dennis Brown or 509-335-2930.

SAMUEL H. SMITH LEADERSHIP AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 15
The Association for Faculty Women is asking for nominations for the Samuel H. Smith Leadership Award.  This award was established to show AFW’s appreciation to President Smith for his leadership in advancing the role of women at WSU and was first awarded in 2000.  Past winners of the award are Dr. Sue Durrant, Dr. Frances McSweeney, Dr. Susan Armitage, Dr. Carolyn Clark, and Dr. KNona Liddell.  This award will be presented for the sixth time during the 2005-2006 academic year.  The award winner will be announced and recognized at the December meeting of the AFW.  The criteria for the award are as follows:

The recipient of the award shall be an AFW member whose leadership has advanced the role of women in the Washington State University system and/or who has demonstrated leadership in higher education, the community, or her profession at the local, state, regional, national, and/or international level.

Nominations should consist of a brief statement (1-2 pages) outlining the contributions of the outstanding AFW member relative to the stated criteria.  Curriculum Vitae should also be submitted for the nominee.  Active and emeritus members of AFW are eligible.  Nominations should be sent by November 15th to Jill McCluskey, Chair, campus mail 6210.

SPOKANE COUNTY PLANT DIAGNOSTIC LAB
The WSU Extension Spokane County Plant Diagnostic Lab will be closed through January 31, 2006.  Samples submitted prior to October 28, 2005, will be completed as usual.  Diagnostics for plant and insect samples will resume on February 1, 2006.

EMAIL EXCHANGE SERVERS “OUT OF OFFICE” REPLIES
On November 1, 2005, there will be a change applied to the Exchange servers at WSU that are managed by IT Services, College of Veterinary Medicine, CAHNRS, College of Business and Economics, Puyallup and Institutional Research. This affects you if you are a user of Exchange on one of these servers.

Up until now, when people used the Outlook Out-of-Office Assistant feature, replies would only go to other WSU Exchange Users, not to any senders from outside of WSU. On Tuesday, this service will be changed to allow Out-of-Office Assistant Auto-Replies to respond to ALL senders. This change may affect you if you are concerned about non-WSU senders getting these messages when you are out of the office, or messages bouncing to listprocs you are subscribed to. Please contact your systems support staff if you have questions about using the Out-of-Office Assistant.  The scope cannot be changed on an individual basis.

(The Out-of-Office Assistant is found under the Tools menu for Outlook and in the Options section of Outlook Web Access.)

NATIONAL EXTENSION DIVERSITY CENTER
November's Edition of the National Extension Diversity Center is on the Web at: http://www.ediversitycenter.net/. Highlights of What's New in November:

Teaching Migrant Workers in Spanish how to plant and prune trees as a means of helping them get raises. This article includes two PowerPoint presentations for you to use in conducting a similar workshop with Spanish-speaking workers and two publications in Spanish and English to accompany your workshop.

Youth and Family Educators may find Kusserow's research findings on the subtle differences between social classes helpful. Kusserow's work is offered with her permission. Okantey's PowerPoint on the achievement gap among differing racioethnic groups is also informative. Finally, Lechman's reflections on the September poverty opinion poll leaves one thinking about Extension’s role as change agents.
