TUFTS LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF POSITIVE
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
This
past spring Washington State 4-H had the opportunity to participate
in the Tufts Longitudinal Study of Positive Youth Development.
This is the very first time that a nationwide study has been conducted
of positive youth development that takes into the design the myriad
of influences/organizations/activities that are impacting both
positively and negatively the lives of young people.
In the round of research conducted this spring I had hoped of
course that all of Washington's 4-H County 4-H Programs would participate.
We only had 8 counties follow through. But here is your opportunity
to participate this FALL!
The intent is to have this study reflect the impacts of the 4-H
program nationwide. The organizers hope to have a large number
of 4-H participants and their parents/guardians complete the questionnaire.
This study will have a great impact on the work of 4-H, as well
as inform many outside of 4-H of the great benefits of having young
people engaged in 4-H programs.
Wave 4 data collection will start in October/November, so now
would be the time to alert Pat BoyEs if you are willing to participate
in WAVE 4. Not only will be able to participate in comprehensive
significant youth research BUT if we have enough participation
in Washington State we'll have impact data that we can share with
our decision makers of the positive impacts that 4-H is making
every day here at home.

WORKSHOPS FOR DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND ACADEMIC DIRECTORS
The Office
of the Provost and Human Resource Services are collaborating in
the offering of a series of Workshops for Department Chairs
and (Academic) Directors. The first session is titled “Overview” and
is scheduled for September 7th from 7:30 am – 9:00 am. The
location of the Wednesday, September 7th Workshop for Department
Chairs and Directors has been changed from Murrow Hall Room # 52
to Holland/ New Library, Room # 24. The workshop, starting at 7:30
am and ending at 9:00 am. Go
straight to the live video stream.

EXTENSION ENGAGED – AIR QUALITY RESEARCH AND OUTREACH
The
first program of the new season of "Extension Engaged" will
take place on Friday, September 23, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The
program will feature a look at WSU's research and outreach in the
area of air quality and will focus on work being conducted by the
Columbia Plateau PM-10 project and the Northwest Airquest Consortium.
Guests will include:
- Brian Lamb, Regents Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
from the College of Engineering and Architecture
- Joe Vaughan, Assistant Research Professor in the Laboratory
for Atmospheric Research, in the Dept. Civil & Environmental
Eng.
- Bill Schillinger, Scientist and Extension Specialist with
the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, stationed at the Lind
Dryland
Research Station of the College of Agricultural, Human, and
Natural Resource Sciences

registration is now open for the CAHNRS Employee Development Conference
for Oct. 18-20, 2005. Register

WSU POLICY ON PLANTING TRANSGENIC CROPS
University policies concerning
genetically modified organisms, in particular, the planting of
transgenic (GMO) crops is available

In addition to other specific materials, all transgenic plants,
vertebrates, invertebrates and microorganisms come under the purview
of the WSU Institutional Biosafety Committee.
OLYMPIA UPDATE: FY 06 PRIORITY
Washington State University proposes
a revised funding mechanism to get construction of the $63 million
WSU Biotechnology/Life Sciences
Building underway by summer, 2006, by leveraging the university’s
own funds from trust lands and utilizing the state treasurer’s
Certificate of Participation process. This revised proposal could
be considered by the 2006 Legislature. The proposal would address
statewide needs for research and economic development without impacting
existing WSU trust land principle, the state’s debt limit,
or compete with other general-fund state capital projects. It utilizes
the same funding mechanism that constructed the Todd Hall Addition
and other projects in Pullman.
