HOBSON MEMORIAL FUND AWARDS ANNOUNCED
The WSU Foundation
and WSU Extension in collaboration with the Karl Hobson family have
established the Karl Hobson Memorial Scholarship
Fund for the support of professional development opportunities for
Extension faculty, staff and volunteers. The 2005 award winners are:
- David Muehleisen—$1000 for Spanish Language Training
- Camille Sullivan—$620 for Nutrition education for special audience
children
- Aaron Hanson—$700 for Wilderness First Responder training

4-H PROGRAMS OF DISTINCTION
Mary Katherine Deen has been notified
that the 4-H Youth Development Apprenticeship Program has been selected
for the Programs of Distinction
database. Programs of Distinction is a collection of program descriptions
that reflect the high quality of youth development programs that
are occurring in communities across the United States. This collection
serves as a resource
of peer-reviewed programs through which 4-H
educators are able to share ideas about successful programs.
It is supported by the 4-H system partners and coordinated through
National 4-H Headquarters and the Cooperative State Research, Education,
and Extension Service (CSREES).
NEW WSU DEANS ANNOUNCED
In addition to the two new Deans named for
the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences
(Dan Bernardo) and for WSU Extension
(Linda Kirk Fox), the following WSU administrators have recently
been named by the Provost:
James P. Kehrer, director of the Center for Molecular and Cellular
Toxicology and Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Professor of Toxicology
at the University of Texas at Austin, has accepted the position of
Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Washington State University. Bill
Fassett, Dean of the College of Pharmacy rejoined the faculty May
15 and WSU Spokane Chancellor Brian Pitcher has been serving as acting
dean of the university’s College of Pharmacy. For complete

Eric Spangenberg has accepted the post of Dean of the College of
Business and Economics. He served as associate dean for faculty affairs
and research since 2002 and most recently as senior associate dean
of the College. Len Jessup, former dean, was recently named president
of the WSU Foundation and vice president for university development.

Erich J. Lear has accepted the post of Dean of the College of Liberal
Arts. Lear has served as interim dean since August 2004 and has accepted
a two-year appointment as Dean. Barbara Couture, the former dean,
resigned the position last year when she was named senior vice chancellor
for academic affairs at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. For complete

Lance T. LeLoup has accepted the post of associate vice provost
for International Programs. He will begin on Sept. 1. Robert Harder,
director of International Programs, is set to retire at the end of

Dean Anjan Bose plans to rejoin the faculty in August 2005.
NE DISTRICT PROVOST TOUR VIDEO AVAILABLE ONLINE
We’ve just
completed a wonderful tour of the SW District. Thanks to Cliff Moore
and to Blair Wolfley and all the faculty, staff,
stakeholders, and volunteers who gave us a warm welcome and a fabulous
showcase of the finest of WSU Extension in SW Washington.

JULY 7 SPILLMAN FIELD DAY CELEBRATION
The Thursday, July 7th field
day of WSU Spillman Agronomy Farm will celebrate the 50th anniversary
of the purchase of the Spillman Farm
site and the 100th anniversary of the release of the first of more
than 70 wheat varieties developed and released by WSU breeders.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and field tours at 8:15 a.m. Bob
Allan, a retired USDA-ARS wheat geneticist who has been conducting
research on the farm since 1957, will be the keynote speaker during
a luncheon program. Spillman Farm is located at 1452 Johnson Road.

NATIONAL DIVERSITY CONFERENCE RESOURCES
The national diversity conference “Creating
a Climate for Change: Strategies in the land-grant system to lead a
diverse America” was
held in April in Greensboro, NC. This conference was sponsored by
Change Agents States for Engagement (CASE)/Change Agents States for
Diversity (CASD). The presentations
from that conference are now
posted online.
You may find these of value to you. I suggest you click on the agenda
for the conference to get a complete listing of session titles before
you begin downloading the PowerPoint presentations.
WSU Extension and Change Agents States for Engagement (CASE) will
host the national diversity conference in Seattle in 2007, dates

RURAL LIFE IN WASHINGTON COFFEE TABLE BOOK
Renewing the Countryside:
Washington is a collection of forty-three stories about individuals
who are sustaining and revitalizing rural
Washington. Six chapters cover topics of community, conservation,
farming and ranching, business, restoration, and innovation. WSU's
Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources (CSANR) was
one of the publishing partners on this stunningly illustrated volume.
