Some of the highlights of the tour's activities and opportunities for the participants to learn about some of the things WSU Extension is doing in the Southwest District to improve the lives of Washington's citizens include:

A stop at WSU Thurston County Extension Office to hear about some of many programs they are involved in including: Water Resources, Native Plant Salvage Project, Water Resource Education Program for Real Estate Professionals, Food Safety and Food $ense, and University Wide Extension/Priorities of Government and Ethics Training and a tour of the WSU Master Gardener's demonstration site at the Olympia Farmer's Market.

In Mason County, tour participants will visit the Little Skookum Shellfish Farm and hear about Water Quality program efforts and the WSU Mason County Extension/Conservation District position. Participants will take part in a Ropes Course Challenge Activity at Camp Panhandle and learn about some of the many programs WSU Mason County Extension is involved in including: the 4-H Forest Intern Program, Special Forest Products, Master Gardener Community Food Bank Project, and the Hispanic Community Outreach Program Children Youth and Families at Risk (CYFAR).

At Grays Harbor County, the group will learn about more Extension Programs taking place in the state including: Youth Development for Tribal Audiences, College: It's Not a Dream, It's a Plan - The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), Developing Healthy Eating Habits for Kids - The Family Nutrition Education Program, Expanding Volunteer Capacity - Community Development and Horticulture, Building Community Partnerships - WSU Learning Center

While in Pacific County the highlights of the tour will include information on Spartina and Burrowing Shrimp Management, the Palix River, WSU Long Beach and their Cranberry Production, a visit to Cape Disappointment and the Lewis and Clark Center to learn about the Pacific Ocean Marine Resources Program.

The tour will stop at the WSU Learning Center - Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties located on the Lower Columbia College Campus where they will hear from Dr. James McLaughlin, President of Lower Columbia College and others to learn about various programs taking place at the Learning Center and in Wahkiakum, Lewis, and Cowlitz counties including: the Spanish Immersion Program, WSU Distance Degree Programs, Food Banks and Nutrition, Diabetes Prevention, After School Programs, Strengthening Families Program, and Coached Forest Stewardship.

In Clark County, the participants will partake in a Food Pyramid Sundae while learning about the new food pyramid as well as other programs going on in the county including: Agriculture as Economic Development, Food & Nutrition (Physical Activity/Healthier Snacks/Nutrition Education), and the Restorative Community Service Garden.

At WSU Vancouver, the group will learn about the WSU Vancouver Institute/Extension Partnership, Sustainable Agriculture at WSU Vancouver Research and Extension Unit, and will hear from Hal Dengerink and Bruce Romanish regarding the Vision and Future for WSU Vancouver.

Each tour participant will receive a binder including a section for each county in the southwest district providing additional information on what goes on for WSU in the Southwest District. It is our hope that after three intense days of travel and learning participants will return to their offices with a new understanding and appreciation for all that WSU Extension does.
