Topics in today’s issue of Extension Update:
ONLINE REGISTRATION OPEN FOR ALL EXTENSION CONFERENCE 2005
All Extension
Conference 2005 is scheduled for March 1-3 in the WSU Compton Union
Building, Washington State University Pullman.
The conference explores the challenge of “Creating a Culture
of Change” through the lenses of two overarching themes: Engagement
and Entrepreneurship. In our outreach mission, WSU Extension promotes
positive change by engaging communities as well as classrooms. This
conference gives us an opportunity to learn new ways of engaging
community members and partners, as well as exploring the meaning
and value of our work in the context of the larger university. Through
the theme of entrepreneurship, we will gather new energy around mobilizing
the resources necessary to do our work despite the uncertainties
of stable public funding. Along the way, we will also have opportunities
to network with colleagues, recognize successful programs, and connect
with faculty across multiple colleges and campuses of the University.
Registration is now open for All Extension Conference 2005. Please register on the
Web.
On the Web site you will also find information about area hotels
so you can make your reservations. Everyone in Extension in program
delivery and educational roles—county faculty, department faculty,
program assistants and coordinators, administrators—is encouraged
to attend.
If you have any questions about the conference agenda, please contact
Blair Wolfley or Louise Parker, Conference Planning Committee Co-chairs.

PHOTO CONTEST WINNER FOR DECEMBER
The winner of the December Extension
Fun Digital Photo Contest is Joanne Manke, who is state nutrition
education coordinator for the
Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. She submitted a photo of
a smiling girl who helped during a cooking demonstration at the Vancouver
Farmers Market. We received several excellent entries in December.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to enter. Please consider entering
images this month. Read the rules
and take a look at the winning entry. Speaking of rules, our
rule dictating when photo releases are required has been unclear.
We have checked
and learned that photo releases are required for both children and
adults under most circumstances. We will post a clarification on
the site.
The theme for January is "Photos from your county. Send in pictures
of county landmarks, photos of the Extension office, either exterior
or interior, pictures of co-workers."
TWO NATIONAL PROGRAMS LEADERS TO JOIN CSREES
Dr. Shirley Gerrior
will become the national program leader for human nutrition, Cooperative
State Research, Education and Extension
Service (CSREES). Her appointment becomes effective February 6, 2005.

by CSREES to address research and education needs in human nutrition.
Strong research programs that address a broad range of nutrition
issues and enhance the educational outreach of the Land-Grant System
are critical in our efforts to advance the discovery and application
of new knowledge. Dr. Gerrior is currently employed by the USDA Center
for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. Dr. Gerrior currently holds the
office of Secretary of the Society for Nutrition Education.
Dr. Marilyn Swanson will become the national program leader for
maternal and child health, CSREES. Her appointment becomes effective
February 20, 2005. She replaces Karen Konzelmann who retired. This

Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas, reflects a
strong commitment by CSREES and the Agricultural Research Service,
both USDA agencies, to work collaboratively to provide strong research
programs that address child and adolescent nutrition and health needs
and to facilitate the application of the research findings by nutrition,
health, and child/youth development educators in program development
and for the education of professionals and family members. Dr. Swanson
is currently the Director of Education and Training for The National
Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) located at the University
