Topics in today’s issue of Extension Update:
NOVEMBER PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
We had 23 entries in the November
Fun Photo Contest, many of them excellent. Our winner is seven-year-old
Kevin VanderMeer, a member
of the 4-H Hotshots Photography Club in Poulsbo. Kevin, with a
little help from his dad, submitted a photo of his sister nose-to-nose
with her guinea pig. The judges liked the composition, varied textures
and large blocks of color. Congratulations Kevin! We received other
excellent shots as well. Unfortunately, some could not be judged
because they were not accompanied by release forms for the minors
pictured in them. The winning image for November can be viewed
at http://ext.wsu.edu/fs/.
The theme for December contest is Food and nutrition programs,
demonstrations, food preparation. Contest
rules.
This contest is open to paid employees and volunteers of WSU Extension
and 4-H youth.
INTERNATIONALIZING EXTENSION CONFERENCE JANUARY 18-20, 2005.
The
conference is being sponsored by the National Initiative to Internationalize
Extension; University of Florida, IFAS; Michigan
State University and the International Programs Office of CSREES.

The interactive community for 4-H youth was
launched at the end of October and has had almost 100,000 visitors
in the
first month
alone. This is a Web site that over a dozen 4-Hers from across
the country have been instrumental in developing over the past 8
months.
It's a site for all youth of 4-H age, not just 4-H members. Go

REMINDERS ABOUT SEVERE WEATHER AND OFFICE CLOSURES
When severe
weather conditions occurs, questions of office closure arise. It
is time to review the Business
Policies and Procedures Manual to answer
your questions about emergency closure. Do you use annual leave
or personal holiday, or other leave? The answer depends on if you
are Faculty, Classified staff, or Administrative Professional.
“Suspended operations” are covered by BPPM 50.40 Safety
and Security. The WSU President may suspend the operation of all
or any part of the institution whenever the President determines
that public health, property, or safety is jeopardized. If the
President is not available, the Provost or the Vice President for
Business Affairs, or, in the absence of these officers, any other
vice president may suspend operations. Supervisors of off-Pullman
campus facilities are responsible for suspending operations in
the facility as dictated by emergency circumstances. Under Personnel
section 60.40 you will find “Staffing during emergency closures” and
the information on accounting for hours not worked.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! SCHEDULE
We wish you and yours happy holidays
and best wishes for the New Year! The following is the planned
time off for staff in the Extension
Director's office. There will be someone here every day to answer
your calls and questions (the university is officially closed Dec.
23, 24, and 31). However, we will not be fully staffed so we can
spend time with family and friends. For grant writing, Esther Tate
will be out December 30th. Dorothy Heitter will be out December
22nd and 27th. Joan Root continues to be working part-time to take
some time off to help care of her mother. We appreciate your patience
and cooperation while we give Joan the support she needs during
this time. Rebecca Armstrong and Sherri Frederick do not have any
planned leave. Tiffany Boswell will not be working during the semester
break starting December 17th. Tiffany will be returning to school
and work on January 10th.
Linda will be taking annual leave on the afternoons of December
22 and 30 and all day December 27th. Ed will be on annual leave
the week of December 27 through 31.
