Topics in today’s issue of Extension Update:
EXTENSION STAFF SUPPORT TRAINING TOPIC FOR SEPTEMBER
As you know
the training scheduled on Service Centers was canceled due to conflict
for the speaker. However, we have scheduled an
excellent program slated to Thursday, September 30, 9:00 – 11:00
am. The topic is “Allowable Expenditures by Program.” Instructions:
Chandler Priebe, General Accounting; Dan Nordquist, Office of Grants
and Research Development (OGRD); and Mary Hoffman, CAHNRS/WSU Extension.
They will discuss the different funding sources at WSU - state,
federal, sponsored programs, self-sustaining and development accounts
and the types of expenditures that are permitted under each fund.
They'll talk about direct and indirect costs (also referred to
as Facilities and Administrative costs); they'll provide tips for
obtaining maximum flexibility in accounts.
Handouts and print materials will be available online before the
training, Tuesday September 28 at the BFO
FACULTY/STAFF WEB SITE.
INTERNATIONALIZING EXTENSION
National Conference on the Initiative
to Internationalize Extension, January 18-20, 2005, Orlando, FL.
In an effort aimed at helping
our citizens better understand the local implications of today’s
globally interdependent world, the second national conference in
Orlando will highlight the progress several states have made in
internationalizing their extension services and programs. This
is a chance to learn about innovative practices resulting from
our “mini-grants” program and share experiences on
effective ways to bring an international perspective to local clientele.
To register for the conference and obtain more information, please

MASTER GARDENER FUNDRAISER
The Art of the Garden
October 2nd
Event
crucial to the well-being of Washington’s Master Gardener
Program.
Nine days from now,
on October 2nd, the Master Gardener Foundation of Washington State
will hold its first ever major fundraising event, The Art of the
Garden. This event, which will be a live and silent auction and
dinner cruise aboard the Royal Argosy Cruise ship, is being held
to raise badly needed funds for this very important community volunteer
program. Because of recent funding cuts, it is crucial that everyone
who is able to come and who cares about the Master Gardener program
join us for this very special evening. At least one large county
program in the northwest district is facing elimination through
county budget cuts. We don’t want to lose any of our county
programs. And, without additional funding, the eagerly-awaited,
updated MG basic training manual will be severely delayed. We need
this additional funding to hire a scientific illustrator and editorial
staff help.
The cost of this event is $125 per person for the general public
and $75 per person for Master Gardeners and their guests. All the
proceeds will go to benefit the Master Gardener program here in
Washington.
We would like to have 140 Master Gardeners join us October 2nd
to support this event and help us as we launch what we hope will
be an annual celebration. To encourage everyone to make a reservation
as soon as possible, the 100th Master Gardener who RSVPs will win
two free tickets with lunch to the Northwest Flower and Garden
Show. The winning Master Gardener will be announced the night of
the event. Reservations for The Art of the Garden can be made by
contacting Juli or
Kathleen, Whistling Rabbits Events, 206-362-5973.
Checks should be made payable to the Master Gardener Foundation
of Washington State (MGFWS).
