HONORING THE HERITAGE OF THE PLATEAU PEOPLES
The College of Liberal
Arts is coordinating the “Honoring
the Heritage of the Plateau Peoples: Past, Present, and Future” conference
on the Pullman Campus September 29 - 30, 2004. This conference
is bringing together members of the Plateau Tribes, scholars, and
others interested in the traditional cultures of the Plateau and
will pay tribute to the individuals who have preserved these traditions.
It will also provide opportunities to explore how the tribes are
working to preserve their cultural traditions and the natural resources
of their lands.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all of the WSU community to
learn about the Indian people of our region. Therefore we are encouraging
faculty, staff, and students to attend individual sessions that
are of interest to them without requiring registration for the
conference. This will be allowed on a space available basis with
registered conference attendees having preferential seating. The
luncheons with keynote speakers are open to registered participants
only.
Any interested persons wishing to attend the traditional long-house
style dinner that will be held in the Livestock Pavilion at 6 pm
on Wednesday night may do so for $30 per person. Traditional and
modern foods will be served and the ritual processes of preparing
and serving the food will be described by the dinner host Dr. Ron
Pond (Umatilla elder and 2004 WSU graduate). The dinner will also
be the occasion for honoring elders from the Tribes. If you would
like to attend this event please contact
Mary Collins at 335-4314.
Please visit the Web site www.libarts.wsu.edu/PlateauConference,
where you will find an agenda and registration information.
