Topics in today’s Extension Update:

MASTER GARDENER CONFERENCE IN OCTOBER
The 2004 Master Gardener Annual Conference is October 14-16 in Olympia. The Conference brochure and registration form are now available online. Space is limited so please pass this information to your volunteers as soon as possible.

EXTENSION MID-MANGERS CONFERENCE RESOURCES ONLINE
Thank you to Blair for chairing the Western Region Mid-Managers Conference which was a great success in July in San Diego. Several from WSU attended; you may want to contact these folks to learn more about the 2004 conference: Chris Jackson, Doug Stienbarger, Debbie Moberg, Arno Bergstrom, Jim Lindstrom, Erik Sorensen, Jim Kropf, Ed Adams, Wayne Madson, and Blair Wolfley. Many of the presentation materials will be posted online.

Mark your calendar for July 12-14, 2005 when Mid-Managers will be held in Santa Fe, NM.

THE ANNUAL CAHNRS SUMMER PICNIC AUGUST 19, 2004
Come help us celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall. Bring your family or a friend, potluck dishes to share, and your own beverage. Plates, utensils, and Ferdinand's Grabbers provided. Join us Lower FSHN Patio Area, 12:00 noon.

Out of town or visiting faculty and friends are invited to join us. We will also be welcoming our new CAHNRS faculty as they close their New Faculty/Administrative Professional Orientation activities.

NEW SEASON OF "EXTENSION ENGAGED" BEGINS IN SEPTEMBER
September will mark the launch of the new season for our ongoing satellite broadcast series, "Extension Engaged.”

The Extension Spanish Immersion Institute
September 24, 9:30-10:30 a.m. PST

Program Description and Guests:

  • Randy De Mars, Coordinator-WSU Learning Center, North Central Washington
  • Ray Faini, Chair, WSU Extension-Chelan County
  • Terri Jones, Coordinator-WSU Learning Center, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum

The broadcast will feature a look at the Spanish Immersion Institute, which is now being offered at 6 WSU Learning Centers. We’ll find out how the program works, what it does, and how it does it and hear from some graduates of the program about how it’s helped them in their professional lives.

We’ll learn about this recent addition to WSU Extension and hear about some of the programs they are conducting with local governments and other audiences in Washington State, including the Certified Public Official Training and the Natural Resource Leadership Academy.

Organic Livestock: Principles, Practices, and Prospects
October 29, 10:00 a.m. - noon PST

  • Mike Gamroth, Oregon State University - Extension Dairy Specialist

  • Organic livestock producer, Joel Huesby, Touchet, WA.
This national satellite broadcast will examine the basics of organic livestock production and the opportunities it presents. The broadcast is intended to help agricultural professionals (Extension, consultants, suppliers, veterinarians, etc.) become familiar with this growing sector of agriculture and to better answer questions and find resources on the topic.

Cultivating Success: The Extension Small Farms Program

Program description and guests:

  • Marcy Ostrom, Coordinator-WSU Extension Small Farms Program
  • Al Kowitz, Chair-WSU Extension- Stevens County
  • Carolyn Clark-WSU Small Business Development Center- Spokane
  • Learn about this course from the Extension Small Farms program which helps small farmers to refine small-acreage farming practices, and to develop business and marketing plans so that they can make their operations profitable.

Water Quality Update

Program description and guests:

  • Bob Simmons, Director and Water Resources Agent WSU Mason County Extension and some other members of the Extension Water Resources Leadership Team will appear.

We’ll hear about some of the programs currently being conducted by the Extension Water Resources Leadership Team and some of the results of their work.

PHOTO CONTEST WINNER FOR JULY
The winner of the July Extension Fun Digital Photo Contest is Don Hanley, Extension forester. His winning image is "Mt. Shuksan in the North Cascades on a nice day for a hike." We received other excellent images this month. Thanks to everyone who took the time to enter. Please consider entering images this month. See the rules and take a look at the winning entry. The theme for August is "Crops."
