PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP ON "CULTIVATING SUCCESS" JUNE
25th
You
are invited to a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE)
Professional
Development Workshop on the “Cultivating
Success” program on June 25th, 9:30 to 3:30, in Renton, WA.
The program is a collaboration between Marcy Ostrom and Cathy Perillo
of Washington State University, Cinda Williams of the University
of Idaho and Colette DePhelps of Rural Roots. The goal of the program
is to create and establish educational programs to increase the
number and foster the success of sustainable small acreage farmers
and ranchers in Washington and Idaho. To accomplish this we are
offering a series of courses for community members and academic
students who are interested in taking one course, or a series of
courses for a certificate in Sustainable Small Acreage Farming
and Ranching.
The two courses that have raised the most interest among community
members are the Sustainable Small Acreage Farming and Ranching
(SSAFR) course and NxLevel's Agricultural Entrepreneurship course
on business planning. These courses have been offered in four counties
in Washington and have received great evaluations.
The workshop will describe the focus and intent of the Cultivating
Success Program, explore sustainable food system concepts and prepare
educators to offer Cultivating Success (CS) courses in their community.
Also attending the workshop will be instructors who have offered
CS courses and will share their experiences with participants.
If
you would like to attend, or would like more information, please
contact the Program Coordinator, Theresa Beaver, University of
Idaho, at 208-885-7787. Travel funds are
available.
"FIELD ANALYSIS OF SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS" COURSE
AUGUST 12 -19
This
summer and next we have funding to help extension educators participate
in this field course “Field Analysis of Sustainable
Food Systems” through a Sustainable
Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) professional development
grant. Educators may choose to attend in a student or co-instructor
role.
The Summer 2004 field course dates are August 12 - August 19.
This course
will emphasize field analyses of multiple examples of different
agricultural operations and businesses, with a focus
on understanding the systems and the concept of sustainability.
We will spend our days visiting farms, processing facilities, and
marketing venues. In the evenings, we'll process our experiences
in group activities & discussions.
Students and instructors will be active participants in the experience.
Students will have primary responsibility for making observations
and gathering information related to the production, economic,
environmental, and social aspects of the various enterprises with
a goal of establishing a framework for assessing sustainability.
The analysis and assessment will be presented to classmates through
interactive oral presentations near the end of the week. Academic
students will continue this analysis in written documents. For
preparation, there will be a number of readings, and a brief pre-course
assignment due at the start of the course. Graduate credit entails
additional work.
This course is available for both academic students and community
members, through either WSU or University of Idaho.
WSU Soils 445/545 or UI Ag 445. See also classes.css.wsu.edu/soils445/
(1 week immersion experience: 3 credits or 5.2 CEU; Graduate
students taking it for academic credit will continue more detailed
discussions through the fall - likely in an online discussion
forum as we have a few students who are not Pullman-based)
Student quote: "...the
Field Course was an amazing experience. The class tied together
a lot of the material taught in my traditional
classes, answered several questions, and raised even more."
This
course is one of many being offered through the Cultivating
Success program.
For
more information or to sign up for this course contact Lead instructor,
Cathy Perillo, 509-335-2851, WSU-Pullman.
