SUSPENDED OPERATIONS AND STAFFING DURING EMERGENCY CLOSURES
Bad weather was the reason for many office closures last week. And winter is not over. It is time to review the Business Policies and Procedures Manual to answer your questions about emergency closure. Do you use annual leave or personal holiday, or other leave? The answer depends on if you are Faculty, Classified staff, or Administrative Professional.

“Suspended operations” are covered by BPPM 50.40 Safety and Security. The WSU President may suspend the operation of all or any part of the institution whenever the President determines that public health, property, or safety is jeopardized. If the President is not available, the Provost or the Vice President for Business Affairs, or, in the absence of these officers, any other vice president may suspend operations. Supervisors of off-Pullman campus facilities are responsible for suspending operations in the facility as dictated by emergency circumstances.

Under Personnel section 60.40 you will find “Staffing during emergency closures” and the information on accounting for hours not worked.

SUMMARY OF EXTENSION ACTIVITES WITH WASHINGTON TRIBAL NATIONS

Last year, Scott Fedale solicited information from all of you for a report we wanted to assemble on our activity with Washington Tribal Nations.

That report is finished and is now available as a PDF file on line as MISC0525, Washington Tribal Nations and Washington State University Extension-A Summary of Activity. It is now available as a PDF file from the Information Department Web page and as a link on the Extension Faculty/Staff page.

There are a limited number of printed copies available. If you would like some, please let Christy Fitzgerald know and we'll try to meet your needs. Thanks again for all of your help in gathering information for this report.

“WOMEN - INSPIRING HOPE & POSSIBILITY”
To recognize the achievements and contributions of women to the academic and local community, and our society, the WSU Woman of the Year and Women of Distinction Awards are presented annually during the National Women’s History Month. President Rawlins will present the awards at the Women’s Recognition Luncheon, Thursday, March 25, 2004.

Four Women, an alumna, an employee, a student (graduate and undergraduate students are included in this category), and a woman outside WSU will be named Women of Distinction. All nominees for Women of Distinction awards are eligible for the Woman of the Year award, whether or not they are recognized as a Woman of Distinction.

To be considered for the awards the nominee will be:

  • A woman who has distinguished herself in academic work, career, leadership, public service, or any combination thereof.
  • A woman who has contributed to the personal growth and success of others, especially women, through education, research, public or volunteer service above and beyond her expected job responsibilities.
  • A woman not honored with this award within the past five years.

Nominations are due February 6th; contact Jill Griffin for nomination forms or more information.

TRAVEL DOLLARS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This is a good time of year to make plans for professional development, including the NAE4-HA in Oklahoma, October 31—November 4, 2004. WSU Extension supports employee engagement in appropriate out-of-state travel and conferences to the extent this is part of a professional development plan. Refer to the State Support section in the Policies and Procedures Web site. Program Directors, District Directors and Department Chairs will handle requests for additional financial support of travel to meetings beyond that already budgeted by county, district, or departmental resources on a case-by-case basis. You should identify travel for professional development in their Plan of Action and discuss with your direct supervisors at the time of your annual review.

SCHEDULE
Monday is a holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., and WSU is closed.
