WASHINGTON RESEARCH AND EXTENSION
On December 17th, CAHNRS Interim Dean Jim Cook and Extension Associate
Dean Linda Fox traveled to Skagit County for a Research and Extension
day. While the location was Skagit County, the overview was not limited
to that county. The schedule included presentations on Skagit county
programs, a lunch meeting with the Extension county chairs of the
surrounding counties, a visit to the Learning Center, and an evening
meeting the with Kitchen Cabinet (advisory board) of the NW Washington
R&E Unit. Thanks to everyone who prepared materials and presented
information for our visit. Jim Kropf did an excellent job organizing
the agenda. A-R-C Architects and WSU Capital Planning also presented
an update on the WSU Mt. Vernon building project. A public meeting
for all interested parties to discuss the progress of the building
project is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13. You are cordially invited
to attend.

WSU
EXTENSION AND WSU TRI-CITIES JOINTLY SUBMIT FOCUSED DIVERSITY HIRING
REQUEST
Diversity is a value in the university strategic plan. The Provost
has set aside a maximum of $200,000 of additional funds to be requested
in a competitive proposal process for focused hiring plan that will
contribute to diversity. Each college or area was given the opportunity
to submit a plan. WSU Extension and WSU Tri-Cities collaborated
on a proposal, which was submitted today, December 19th. The departments
of Community and Rural Sociology, Sociology, and Human Development
identified a plan to build an academic program at Tri-Cities with
an outreach component, as well as hire focused diversity position
in the SE District. Next step is to wait to hear if we get funding.
Briefly,
Phase I of the Diversity Hiring Plan jointly proposed by WSU Tri-Cities
and WSU Extension would be to hire a senior level faculty member
(professor or associate professor with tenure) at WSU Tri-Cities
to build and serve as Director of the Hispanic Studies program (Draft
position description attached). In addition to these academic responsibilities,
the primary Extension focus would center on providing vision, leadership
and coordination for Extension educators in the Tri-Cities region
already engaged, albeit in an ad hoc manner, with the Hispanic population.
This focus will enhance current efforts and enable Extension to
broaden outreach and interaction with the Latinas/os in south central
Washington. Phase II would be to identify through community engagement
the highest priority area for a junior faculty hire (teaching) and
an Extension educator, MS degree, based in a neighboring county
(Benton, Franklin, or Yakima, TBD).
