FUNDING WATERSHED RESTORATION IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
NOVEMBER 18, 2003 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time (satellite test pattern begins at 8:30 a.m.)

To increase the sustainability of natural resource restoration projects as well as building capacity of watershed planning organizations, WSU Cooperative Extension, in cooperation with the Pacific Northwest Regional Water Quality Programand the Environmental Finance Center (Center) at Boise State University is presenting a satellite conference on funding watershed projects on November 18, 2003.

Over the last two years the Center has held regional workshops in all four Northwestern States to introduce a comprehensive database of natural resource funders. The searchable database divides funders into federal, state, foundation, and private categories. Organizational funding goals and limitations are included to assist the grant writer with matching project needs to funders' areas of interest.

The Center has developed a new computer-based tool, Plan2Fund* for assisting the design of long-term projects in order that discrete segments are facilitating the leveraging of funding to accomplish a long-term project. Personnel from the Center will develop a scenario encompassing common riparian and stream degradations to demonstrate how the software may be used to transform watershed goals into objectives and tasks, as well as, delineate a project timeline. The remote audiences will have phone, e-mail, and fax access to the studio to ask questions about using Plan2Fund* for their specific needs.

A grant writer and an evaluator will present in the second segment of the broadcast. They will use the scenario built in the previous hour to guide the participants in creating a sound document that articulates needs and project plans so as to satisfy the requirements of the Request for Proposals. The presenters will be available for participant questions on methods and philosophies of high-quality proposal writing by phone, fax, and e-mail.

The audiences this program is designed to reach are watershed councils, planning groups, tribes, local, and county government planning agencies and natural resource departments. Extension Service staff and faculty and Conservation District personnel are especially invited to participate to increase their capability to assist constituencies in watershed planning efforts.

Call the Extension office in your area for a reservation. If your Extension office is not hosting a viewing site, ask if they will. If you'd like to be part of the studio audience in Pullman, come to room T-101 of the Food Science and Human Nutrition Building and plan to be in your seat by 8:50 a.m.

NUTRITION EDUCATION REPORTS
We are happy to announce the posting of two milestone reports on our national FSNE Web site. Go to “Reports” in the left column.

  • Food Stamp Nutrition Education within the Cooperative Extension/Land-Grant University System
  • Food Stamp Nutrition Education in the 1890 Community

The first, "Food Stamp Nutrition Education within the Cooperative Extension Land-Grant University System" provides a “national snapshot” of FSNE in FY 2002. It is the first report of its kind prepared for the Land-Grant System. Co-authors are Dr. Deborah Little and Dr. Michael Newman from Mississippi State University. As you review this report, please note that it includes two-page summaries for both FNS and CSREES regions. These regional reports will be posted on the Web site as Word documents, so that you can use them in preparing state and local reports, if desired.

The second report, “Food Stamp Nutrition Education in the 1890 Community” identifies challenges and unique contributions of the 1890 Institutions in providing FSNE, authored by Dr. Jacquelyn McCray from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Copies of these reports will soon be sent to FSNE coordinators across the Land-Grant University System. The first report will be sent to all Land-Grant Institutions. The second report will be sent to 1890 Institutions and Institutions that are affiliated with or have potential of working with 1890 Institutions.
